UPDATE: Malaysia’s Communication and Multimedia Minister, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has confirmed that Steam was blocked after failing to comply with the government’s 24-hour ultimatum.

UPDATE 2: Steam has removed the controversial game for Malaysian users.

UPDATE 3: Malaysia lifts blockade on Steam. TM UniFi users should be able to access and it might take longer for mobile broadband users.

Steam, the popular software distribution platform has been blocked Malaysia. You can no longer access their front page through our local ISP but if you already have the app installed you can still download games at the time of writing.

We can’t confirm the reason for the blockage but it might be due to the controversial game, “Fight of Gods.” According to TheStar, MCMC has called for the game platform provider to disable downloads for Malaysians within 24 hours as it is deemed insulting to religions and religious leaders.

UPDATE: The Communication and Multimedia Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has confirmed that Steam was blocked to protect the users and to prevent untoward incidents. The government had given Steam a 24-hour ultimatum to disable “Fight of Gods” downloads for Malaysians but unfortunately, they have failed to comply.

On a mobile browser, you can still access the website if you have data saver enabled. To bypass this blockade, you can still access the site if you use Google DNS (8.8.4.4 / 8.8.8.8).

To change to google DNS on your Windows computer, follow the steps below.
1. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Centre
2a. If you’re on LAN, click on Connections: Local Area Connection
2b. If you’re on WiFi, click on Connections: WiFi

3. Click on Properties

4. Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

5. Enter 8.8.4.4 / 8.8.8.8 under “Use the following DNS server addresses”.
6. Restart your connection if necessary and you should be done.

We’ll update more as soon as we get more info. Are you able to access Steam website? Let us know in the comments below.
