BYD Flash Charger installation underway at Denza Balakong

Denza Balakong has been spotted as the next BYD Flash Charger location in Malaysia. Notably, deployment at the Balakong site appears to be further along than at Denza Glenmarie, which was sighted on 19 October.

We first caught wind of the Balakong setup thanks to SoyaCincau EV User Group member U-jinn. Unlike the Glenmarie location, the T-shaped overhead structure housing the charging connectors is already installed and clearly visible from the main road.

The charger’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) enclosures were also spotted on-site. However, installation remains active, with workers on-site during our visit this afternoon.

BYD Malaysia has yet to announce an official launch date for these Flash Chargers. However, back in May, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, Jacob Ma, revealed that Denza showrooms would be among the first locations to receive Flash Charge stations. He also confirmed that the chargers will be open to all EV brands rather than being exclusive to BYD and Denza models.

What is BYD Flash Charge?

A BYD Flash Charger at Zhengzhou, China.

Introduced globally earlier this year, BYD Flash Charge stations are capable of delivering a peak DC output of up to 1.5MW (1,500kW). On supported vehicles, expected charging speeds are:

  • 10% to 70%: 5 minutes
  • 10% to 97%: 9 minutes
  • Cold weather: Adds 3 minutes

This performance is summarised by BYD’s official tagline for the technology: “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3.”

To handle such massive power demands without overwhelming local grid infrastructure, BYD integrates a BESS into each Flash Charge setup. These battery packs charge slowly from the local grid during idle periods and discharge high-power bursts when a compatible EV plugs in.

Each cabinet houses a 185kWh battery, offering a combined 370kWh capacity per Flash Charger. Depending on local grid capability, the BESS recharges from the grid at rates between 100kW and 560kW.

Additionally, the T-shaped pillar functions as a “Zero Gravity” cable management system. Suspended from above, the heavy charging cables stay clean and off the ground while sliding left to right to accommodate vehicles with charging ports on either side.

Currently, the only Denza model in Malaysia capable of taking full advantage of Flash Charging is the Denza Z9 GT. Nevertheless, older 400V/800V BYD models and non-BYD EVs can still plug in and charge at their maximum supported DC intake rates.
