Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ EV now in Malaysia for RM275k: 800V electric sedan with over 700km of range

Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ EV is now officially available in Malaysia. The new electric sedan is the first all-new Mercedes-Benz EV in Malaysia, following the G-Class EV that was launched last June.

When it was previewed in Malaysia back in January, the German marque said that the estimated price tag for the CLA 250+ EV is RM295,888. However, the official price tag turned out to be much lower.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ EV can be obtained in Malaysia with a starting price of RM274,888, which is RM21,000 lower than the original estimate. Through the Agility+ plan, customers can get their hands on the new EV from RM2,988 per month.

The EV comes standard with a 4-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty alongside an 8-year / 160,000km warranty for the EV battery. For Agility+ customers, they will get extra perks including an additional 1-year vehicle warranty and 4 Compact Service Packages.

All CLA 250+ EV owners in Malaysia will also be provided with a free AC wallbox, but installation costs are not included.

In terms of colourways, the options listed in the configurator on Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s website include Aqua-mint, Polar White, High-tech Silver, Cosmos Black, and Sheer Blue. There are also several Manufaktur options such as Patagonia Red Metallic and Alpine Grey Solid, which can be obtained for an additional RM6,000.

Inside the car, the CLA 250+ EV comes standard with a combination of Artico leather and Microcut microfibre upholstery in Black alongside anthracite anodised-look trim elements and a sports steering wheel with nappa leather. The Malaysia-spec unit also comes with AMG Line sports seats and 19-inch AMG 5-twin-spoke light alloy wheels.

Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ EV Malaysia Quick Specs

One of the main highlights for the new CLA 250+ EV is its range – specifically, Mercedes claimed that this particular variant is able to deliver up to 792km of WLTP-rated range. The company also claimed that the energy consumption rate for the new electric sedan can be as low as 12.2kWh / 100km.

Powered by an 85kWh NMC battery, the CLA 250+ EV is equipped with a 200kW (268hp) electric motor that also produces 335NM of torque. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) model is capable of hitting 0 to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 210km/h.

You don’t see this often on an EV, but the CLA 250+ EV has a 2-speed gearbox. According to Mercedes, the 1st gear is designed to deliver acceleration, high towing capacity, and efficiency in urban traffic, while the 2nd gear is for power delivery at high speeds and efficiency on the highway.

Thanks to its 800V architecture, the CLA 250+ EV can support a blazingly fast DC charging speed of up to 325kW, which allows the EV to be charged from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes. The German automaker claimed that this allows the electric sedan to obtain up to 325km of range in just 10 minutes, when charged with a supported DC charger.

However, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has confirmed that the Malaysia-spec CLA 250+ EV will not be retrofitted with a 400V converter as in the United States. It will not even be offered as an option like in certain European markets.

The company appears to be quite confident that the lack of support for 400V chargers will not be a big issue in Malaysia. After all, it has estimated that at least over 60% of public EV chargers in Malaysia can support 800V and above.

Furthermore, the MB.Charge Public service is now available in Malaysia, allowing Mercedes-Benz EV and PHEV owners to locate and activate chargers directly from the in-car MBUX multimedia system or the Mercedes-Benz App. For CLA 250+ EV owners, the service will indicate which chargers are compatible with their car.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia-spec CLA 250+ EV is also equipped with an 11kW on-board AC charging module. When charged with a 3-phase 11kW AC charger, the charging time from 0% to 100% is around 9 hours.

Outside of the technical specs, the CLA 250+ EV also features a rather sleek and eye-catching exterior design, especially through its grille, which features individually animated LED stars. With a drag coefficient of just 0.21, the new model also features a massive, one-piece panoramic glass roof that seamlessly extends from the EV’s windscreen frame all the way to the rear.

While the display units shown at the launch event today didn’t have it, the company has confirmed that the Malaysia-spec CLA 250+ EV is equipped with MBUX Superscreen as standard. For those who are not familiar with it, the Superscreen consists of a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver, a 14-inch central infotainment display, and another 14-inch display that is dedicated to the front passenger.

At the same time, the German marque didn’t forget to point out that the CLA EV is the first modern Mercedes model to feature a frunk, which offers 101L of load space. On the back, the EV has 405L of boot space.
