TikTok Malaysia has officially moved from digital awareness to hands-on empowerment with the launch of #ThinkTwice Training. This new train-the-trainer workshop series is designed to turn parents, creators, and educators into Community Champions, equipped with the technical skills to safeguard the next generation of digital natives.
We want to lighten the burden for parents. By providing simple-to-use tools that automate parental supervision, we ensure that parents don’t have to monitor every second, but can still feel confident in their teen’s safety.
Firdaus Fadzil, Malaysia Head of Public Policy, TikTok.

In collaboration with the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) and the Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE), this initiative addresses the parental burden by highlighting Safety by Design, a system where over 50 privacy and security settings are automatically preset for teenagers.
Part 1: The Digital Guardian’s Manual

1. Protection by Default
TikTok’s architecture ensures that as a teen grows, their digital boundaries expand gradually. Parents do not need to start from scratch; the platform automates supervision through these default tiers:
| Feature | Teens (Ages 13–15) | Teens (Ages 16–17) |
|---|---|---|
| Account Privacy | Private by Default | Private Pre-selected |
| Direct Messaging | Disabled | Off by Default |
| Screen Time | 60-Minute Default | 60-Minute Default |
| Nighttime Muting | Notifications stop at 9:00pm | Notifications stop at 10:00pm |
| Nighttime Meditation | Active 10pm – 6am | Active 10pm – 6am |
| For You Feed (FYP) | Not eligible for FYP | Eligible (with age filters) |
| Interactions | Duet, Stitch, Downloads: Disabled | Duet, Stitch: Off by Default |
| Comments | Only Friends can comment | Followers by default |
| Monetization | No Shop, LIVE, or Gifts | No Shop, LIVE, or Gifts |
2. Family Pairing: Enhanced Command Centre
The cornerstone of the training is the Family Pairing tool, which allows a guardian to link their account to their teen’s account to manage over 20 settings.
Newly Highlighted Technical Features:
- Manage Topics Visibility: A powerful new control allowing parents to manage which specific topics are allowed or restricted in their teen’s feed.
- 4-Week Screen Time Dashboard: Provides a detailed weekly summary of how much time is spent on the app and how many times it was opened daily.
- Time Away Schedules: Parents can set custom Time Away blocks (e.g., for homework or sleep) where the teen cannot access the app.
- New Content Notifications: Parents can opt to receive a notification in their own inbox whenever their teen uploads a new video.
- Connections Management: Parents can view exactly who their teen follows and who they have blocked.
- STEM Feed: An educational Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math feed is enabled by default to ensure high-value content discovery.
3. Accountability & Proactive Enforcement
TikTok’s corporate commitment to safety is backed by large-scale global operations:
- Age Assurance: The platform suspends approximately 6 million accounts monthly, suspected of being under age 13.
- Global Alliances: Partnerships with the WePROTECT Global Alliance, Internet Watch Foundation, and the Technology Coalition to pre-empt emerging risks.
- Community Reporting: A long-press on any video allows for immediate reporting, with data published in a dedicated Transparency Centre.
- Well-being Missions: Teens are encouraged to earn in-app badges for practising mindful digital habits, such as taking breaks.
4. Learning Through Simulation
The #ThinkTwice Training uses interactive safety simulations to prepare parents for real-life scenarios. Using the character Teen Cloud, parents practice:
- Blocking Scammers: Using the #ThinkTwice Knowledge Hub to identify and report fraudulent activity.
- Combating Bullying: Activating Creator Care Mode and Restricted Mode to filter out unkind comments and mature content.
Part 2: TikTok’s Vision for a Safer Digital Malaysia
While the safety tools provide the how-to for individual families, TikTok’s corporate strategy in 2026 focuses on building a self-sustaining ecosystem of digital literacy. The launch of the #ThinkTwice Training initiative on March 31, 2026, represents a shift from centralised awareness campaigns to a decentralised train-the-trainer model designed to empower local community leaders.
1. The Power of Partnership: A Whole-of-Society Approach
TikTok’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy is built on the belief that online safety is a shared responsibility. By partnering with two of Malaysia’s most influential advocacy groups, the platform is integrating safety into the national conversation on education and media.
- The Content Forum (Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia): Under the leadership of CEO Mediha Mahmood, the partnership frames digital literacy as a fundamental life skill. The corporate goal is not just to protect users on one app, but to raise resilient and responsible digital natives who can navigate the entire internet safely.
- PAGE (Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia): Represented by Honorary Secretary Tunku Munawirah Putra, this collaboration highlights the economic necessity of digital participation. The initiative acknowledges that parents are often too busy to keep pace with rapid tech changes, necessitating corporate solutions that lighten the burden through automation and intuitive design.
2. Quantifying the Impact
The awareness phase of the #ThinkTwice campaign has already achieved unprecedented scale in Malaysia, providing a strong foundation for the new training phase:
- 400 Million Views: Nationwide reach for educational content, making digital safety a viral topic.
- 1.4 Million Hub Visits: Substantial engagement with the multilingual in-app knowledge hub, which offers specialised resources on scam prevention and mental health.
- Community Champions: The program aims to create a network of champions (academics, creators, and civil society leaders) who can continue the training within their own professional and social circles.
3. A Year-Round Commitment
TikTok has committed to a long-term roadmap. The #ThinkTwice Training workshops are scheduled to roll out to various local communities across Malaysia year-round. By focusing on interactive safety simulations, such as the Teen Cloud scenarios, TikTok is positioning itself as a proactive stakeholder in Malaysia’s digital future, rather than just a service provider.
