Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) market continued to grow in February 2026 even as overall vehicle registrations declined. According to the latest JPJ data, 3,635 EVs were registered in February 2026, representing a 68% increase year-on-year compared to 2,160 units recorded in February 2025.

Despite the strong growth in EV adoption, overall vehicle registrations declined significantly during the month. Total Industry Volume (TIV) fell 15.8% YoY from 67,327 units in February 2025 to 56,690 units in February 2026.

As a result, EVs accounted for 6.4% of all new vehicles registered during the month.

Nearly 10,000 EVs registered in just two months

Looking at the year-to-date numbers, EV registrations in Malaysia reached 9,874 units in the first two months of 2026, more than 2.5 times higher than the same period last year.

With overall vehicle registrations reaching 124,685 units year-to-date, EVs now account for 7.9% of total new vehicle registrations so far in 2026. This suggests continued momentum for EV adoption in Malaysia despite the end of tax incentives for fully imported EVs at the end of 2025.

Petrol-powered vehicles remain the dominant choice among Malaysian buyers, accounting for 83.9% of all new vehicles registered in the first two months of 2026 but it has shown a slight decline by 2.17%.

Hybrid petrol powered vehicles show a slight growth YoY by 4.55% in February while diesel vehicle registrations have declined significantly. Green Diesel however, has grown substantially by 48.97% YoY.
