Malaysia EV registrations tripled in November 2025, Tesla Model Y takes #1 spot

Malaysia’s EV adoption continues to accelerate based on the latest registration data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

A total of 5,417 EVs were registered in November 2025, which is a record high and it represents a 200% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to November 2024. EVs account for 7% of total industry volume (TIV) last month.

While Proton e.MAS 7 has dominated most of 2025, Tesla has reclaimed the crown for November with the Model Y becoming the most popular EV last month.

EVs on track to exceed 40,000 registrations for full year 2025

The overall TIV has increased modestly from 71,818 to 77,876 units last month which represents a growth of 8.46%. EVs continue to show the strongest growth of any fuel type in Malaysia, outpacing hybrids and ICE vehicles.

As mentioned earlier, the number of EVs registered in November 2025 has tripled (200% growth) from 1,805 units in November 2024.

From January to November 2025, a total of 36,690 EVs have been registered and the segment is on track to exceed 40,000 units for the full year. As a comparison, there were 19,208 EVs registered in the first 11 months of 2024.

Top 30 EV models in Malaysia for November 2025

The Tesla Model Y saw its strongest month with a total of 810 units registered, putting it on the #1 spot. This is followed by the Proton e.MAS 7 at #2 with 786 units and Tesla Model 3 at #3 with 491 units.

BYD still continues its stronghold with the BYD Atto 3 (440), BYD Sealion 7 (427) and BYD Seal 6 (380) taking the #4 to #6 spot, followed by the Zeekr 7X at #7 with 274 units. Also worth noting that Chery has delivered 215 units of the iCaur 03 while the Perodua QV-E enters the Top 30 list at #30 with 18 units.

For the first 11 months of the year, the Proton e.MAS 7 remains the most popular EV in the country with 7,740 units delivered. This is followed by the BYD Sealion 7 at #2 with 3,569 units and the BYD Atto 3 at #3 with 3,569.

Tesla takes the 4th and 5th spot with the Model Y (3,490) and Model 3 (1,977).

When it comes to premium MPVs, the Denza D9 is still the most popular with 1,002 units delivered so far, followed by the Zeekr 009 at #13 with 765 units and the XPeng X9 at #15 with 564 units.

Top 20 EV Brands in Malaysia from January to November 2025

When it comes to brands, BYD still holds the largest market share of registrations with 11,870 units. If we include the Denza premium sub-brand, the Chinese automaker commands 35% of total EV registrations.

Proton, predominantly driven by the e.MAS 7, is at #2 with 7,784 units, and this is followed by Tesla at #3 with 5,468.

Interestingly, Zeekr has emerged as the #4 brand in Malaysia with 1,718 units. The brand was boosted by the Zeekr 7X which is seen as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y. Meanwhile, BMW is at #5 with 1,368 units.
