Electric Vehicle (EV) registrations in Malaysia continue to show a steady growth despite a dip in registrations last month. There’s also an interesting shake up as Proton regains its #1 spot in June as registrations for the Tesla Model Y drop to #3.
According to the latest vehicle registration data updated up to 30th June 2025, a total of 3,272 EVs were registered in June, accounting for 5.65% of Malaysia’s Total Industry Volume (TIV) of 58,858 units. As a comparison, 4,152 EVs were registered in May, which account for 5.58% of TIV.
Despite the market slowdown in Malaysia, the EV sector still shows an encouraging Year-to-Date (YTD) growth of 60.77% (Jan to Jun 2024 vs Jan to Jun 2025) and Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 71.13% (June 2024 vs June 2025). A total of 17,143 EVs have been registered within the first 6 months of the 2025, versus just 10,663 units for the same period last year.
Meanwhile, petrol vehicle registrations dipped by 4.88% YTD, while green diesel vehicles fare worse with a decline of 28.54% YTD. Hybrid vehicles are showing YTD growth of 20.86%, which is slightly below fully electric vehicles.
Top 30 EV models in Malaysia for June 2025
Tesla Model Y was the #1 most popular model in May but the title was short-lived as registrations dropped by half to just 460 units in June. As a result, the Proton e.MAS 7 regains the top spot despite its monthly registrations declined to 604 units in June, the lowest since March.
Meanwhile, BYD is catching up at #2 with its refreshed BYD Atto 3 Ultra registering 471 units, while the popular Sealion 7 has declined to #4 with 320 units.
Interestingly, Chery’s Omoda E5 has jumped to the top 5 spot with 186 units, which isn’t surprising due to its massive discounts and promo.

For the first 6 months of 2025, the Proton e.MAS 7 still leads with 4,003 units registered, followed by the BYD Sealion 7 at #2 with 1,960 units and the BYD Atto 3 at #3 with 1,701 units.
This is followed by the Tesla Model Y at #4 with 1,571 units and the BYD M6 electric MPV at #5 with 977.
Top 20 EV Brands in Malaysia from January to June 2025
With the variety of models available, BYD is still the #1 EV Brand with 5,400 units registered so far, commanding a 31.5% EV market share in Malaysia. If BYD’s premium sub-brand Denza (615 units) is included, that’s a collective 6,015 units, equivalent to 35% market share. Essentially a third of all new EVs registered in Malaysia is from the BYD Group.
Proton at #2, despite having just one model available, has registered 4,003 EVs YTD, commanding 23.35% EV market share. This is followed by Tesla at #3 with 2,397, representing 13.98% EV market share. Meanwhile, BMW Group (including Mini) still leads the premium EV segment with 1207 units registered YTD and a 7.04% market share.
