Volvo invented the seatbelt — and now it’s getting a major overhaul

Volvo has just announced a world-first “multi-adaptive” safety belt, set to debut in the upcoming Volvo EX60, a fully electric SUV launching in 2026.

This isn’t your standard 3-point belt. It’s a data-driven safety system that can adapt in real time based on your body type, seating position, and crash severity.

A smart seatbelt? What is that?

The multi-adaptive safety belt taps into real-time sensor data from both inside and outside the vehicle. Using inputs like speed, impact direction, posture, and even your body size, the system selects one of eleven load-limiting profiles — up from just three in current systems.

That means:

  • Bigger body, harder crash? You get more restraint to reduce head trauma.
  • Smaller frame, lighter impact? Softer load to avoid rib fractures.

And it does this in milliseconds — before you even realise what’s happening.

A seatbelt that gets OTA updates

What makes this truly next-gen is that it improves over time. Through over-the-air software updates, Volvo can refine how the system responds as it learns from more crash data.

New multi-adaptive safety belt – exploded view

Volvo already has a database of over 80,000 real-world accident cases, and they’re using it to train smarter systems — not just for crash protection, but for tailoring safety to different body types and driving conditions.

This new belt also works in sync with airbags, occupant detection and the car’s driver assist systems — forming a broader safety ecosystem built around real-world performance, not just lab tests.

Coming soon to Malaysia?

Volvo has been fairly up to date with EV launches in Malaysia, so we’re expecting the EX60 to make its local debut not long after the global release — possibly by late 2026 or early 2027.
