Cyber X: MG’s new compact electric SUV featuring pop-up headlights

MG has unveiled a new EV in the “Cyberster family” and it’s called the Cyber X. This boxy-looking compact electric SUV seems to be MG’s modern take on rugged SUVs like the Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes-Benz G Class.

The Cyber X also has a little throwback to the 70s with the inclusion of pop-up lights on the hood.

At the time of launch, the Cyber X appears to be a concept and MG has yet to reveal its interior design. MG and SAIC have also not shared any further details about the Cyber X including its motors, battery and expected range.

While the MG Cyberster is a sporty looking roadster with scissor doors, the Cyber X looks more like a fashion oriented urban cruiser. It looks pretty sleek in its matte dark grey exterior, while the illuminated logos and full-width lightbars give it a very futuristic and robotic appearance.

During the unveiling, it was shared that the Cyber X measures at 4.3 metres (4300mm) long. That’s shorter than the Proton e.MAS 7 (4615mm), MGS5 EV (4476mm) and BYD Atto 3 (4455mm). However, it is still longer than the 5-door Suzuki Jimny (3822mm).

Despite its compact dimensions, the Cyber X rides on rather large two-tone 20″ wheels wrapped around with Bearway BW777 265/55R20 tyres.

The biggest party trick is the twin pop-up lights at the front which lifts up by a couple of inches. While it looks cool, it would be interesting to see if this design quirk will make it to the production model. And most importantly whether it would affect pedestrian safety scores.

We still don’t know when the Cyber X will go into production, but SAIC did share they they are aiming to release a total of 17 vehicles in the next 3 years. This includes 7 SUVs, 7 cars, 1 MPV and 2 pickups, which runs on various drivetrains including ICE, HEV, PHEV and BEV.
