Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) has recorded a 17% year-on-year (YoY) increase in internet traffic in 2024, with an all-time high of 2.6 Terabit per second (Tbps). The increase indicates a growing demand for high-speed, reliable internet access in the country. As a reference, demand at MyIX peaked at 2.311Tbps in 2023 and 1.938 Tbps in 2022.

According to MyIX, the growth also highlights the growing reliance on MyIX’s peering infrastructure, driven by businesses, content providers, and consumers fueling Malaysia’s digital economy.

Surge in traffic indicates Malaysia’s rapidly expanding digital economy

During MyIX’s recently concluded 17th Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 held last week, its Chairman Chiew Kok Hin said, “The continuous surge in internet traffic is a strong indicator of Malaysia’s rapidly expanding digital economy.”

“The growing dependence on stable, high-speed connectivity reflects the country’s digital transformation journey, where businesses, content providers and consumers are more interconnected than ever. This growth is also a testament to the collective efforts of industry players, the government, and regulatory bodies in fostering a conducive digital ecosystem,” he added.

MyIX also commended the government’s role for having proactive policies and initiatives that have enabled businesses and the rakyat to embrace digitalisation seamlessly.

Chiew said, “The government’s commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure, implementing forward-thinking policies, and fostering public-private partnerships has been instrumental in driving Malaysia’s digital economy forward. These efforts continue to improve nationwide connectivity while creating more opportunities for businesses to scale and innovate in an increasingly competitive global landscape.”

MyIX committed to ensure a secure, resilient and future-ready internet infrastructure

In order to meet growing traffic demands, MyIX has expanded its Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) capacity, enhancing data transmission speeds between key network nodes and ensuring greater efficiency.

It will also continue to prioritise strengthening its security framework and conduct comprehensive security audits of its infrastructure, covering penetration testing, web application security assessments and network architecture reviews.

As announced last year, MyIX has made a series of port fee reductions which took effect in April 2024. The move was aimed at further lowering cost of peering at MyIX and making it more accessible for businesses and network operators.

Chiew said, “By offering cost-effective connectivity solutions, MyIX is helping to drive digital inclusivity and ensure that businesses of all sizes can benefit from reliable, high-speed internet exchange services.” He also added that MyIX currently is one of the most affordable exchanges in Southeast Asia while also being one of the region’s most prominent exchanges in terms of both traffic and robustness.

As Malaysia advances in digitalisation and 5G deployment, Chiew said that MyIX remains committed to ensuring a secure, resilient and future-ready internet infrastructure that empowers businesses and communities nationwide.
