The authorities will begin the trial for the new Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) this June. The new system will be utilising a new way that will replace the existing method to detect speed limit violations.

The date and locations of the trials were revealed by the Secretary-General for the Ministry of Transport, Jana Santhiran. While the authorities already installed the new AWAS camera in various locations across the country, the upcoming trials will only involve two highway routes.

One of them would be from the Genting Sempah tunnel to the Gombak R&R at the KL – Karak Expressway. The authorities are also planning to test the system at the route between Senawang toll plaza and Simpang Ampat toll plaza on the North-South Expressway.

AWAS vs AES – what are the differences?

AWAS is using the Ekin Spotter cameras which replaced the old Redflex Traffic Systems cameras that were used for the previous Automated Enforcement System (AES).  The modular-based camera is capable of detecting speeds of up to 320km/h alongside Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.

Instead of capturing the speed of the passing vehicle, AWAS is adopting the point-to-point method that will calculate the time that the vehicle would reach its destination corresponding to the route’s speed limit. This way, you are no longer able to avoid detection by slowing down in front of the speed trap camera.

Take this scenario as an example: you are supposed to reach a particular toll plaza from point A in 30 minutes based on a 110km/h speed limit but you arrive at the plaza in 20 minutes. This means you have violated the speed limit and AWAS may have caught you in action.
