Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Ericsson have enabled 5G Advanced (also known as 5.5G) on DNB’s network. Being one of the first to enable 5G Advanced capability, the new enhancement aims to enhance user experience with ultra-low latency and high-throughput, improved network reliability, as well as enabling a truly immersive experience.
According to DNB and Ericsson, 5G Advanced which is built on the foundation of 5G, ensures consistent and superior user experience at any time and place, and can influence the network behaviour to achieve desired outcomes.
It added that the DNB network will continue to benefit from Ericsson’s AI intent-based operations to build a high performing network. As a result, the advancements will enhance user experience and enable innovative consumer and enterprise applications that were not possible with standard 5G.
At the moment, 5G Advanced is mostly beneficial to the enterprise sector as consumer smartphones with 5.5G support isn’t widely available yet.
Among the key 5G Advanced solutions is RedCap (Reduced Capability), which enables a wider range of use cases for wearables and industry sensors as it offers extended battery life and reduced complexity for devices. As a result, businesses can benefit from better IoT deployments, improved efficiencies and a more affordable way to innovate.
In addition, 5G Advanced also brings intent-based solutions such as Automated Energy Saver which is offered as part of Ericsson’s Energy Efficiency and Management subscription, to maximise energy performance.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh hopes the enhancement of Malaysia’s 5G network will encourage more 5G adoption among users especially enterprises. He said, “Accelerating 5G adoption across various enterprises is vital for Malaysia’s digital transformation. It not only positions Malaysia as a 5G leader during our ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 but also bolsters our influence on digital investments and benefits in the region.”
DNB CEO Datuk Azman Ismail said, “Our 5G network is globally recognised for its performance and reliability. With 5G Advanced, DNB aims to help accelerate the digitalisation journey of enterprises working with our access seekers in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, oil and gas, agriculture, and tourism with advanced tools to innovate and deliver superior products and services.”
Meanwhile, Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, David Hagerbro said, “5G Advanced capability has been switched on for the DNB network. Ericsson will continue to jointly develop 5G Advanced capabilities strategically with DNB to make the network even more intelligent, efficient and secure. DNB is already a global leader in 5G and the launch of the 5G Advanced capability will enable it to strengthen it’s position.”
As of December 2024, Malaysia has recorded 18.2 million 5G service subscriptions which represents a 5G adoption rate of 53.4%. DNB added that the adoption of 5G Advanced will play a crucial role in achieving economic growth and fostering a more connected society. DNB’s 5G network currently covers over 80% of populated areas in Malaysia and it is currently accessed by customers on CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM and YTL Communications.
