You can now tap credit or debit card to pay for EV charging at selected TNB Electron chargers, starting with TNB Electron Juru in Penang. If you own a CIMB or Visa card, you can even enjoy discounts for EV charging at these TNB Electron chargers.
This is made possible through a collaboration between CIMB, Visa, and JuiceUp, which is the payment solution provider for TNB Electron. Both parties first revealed their partnership at EVX 2024 last July.
Discount rates for CIMB and Visa cardholders
CIMB cardholders can get 10% off their EV charging fee at the selected TNB Electron locations, regardless of their card branding. Do note that there is a maximum discount limit of RM8 per charging session.
On the other hand, Visa cardholders, irrespective of the card issuers, can enjoy a much higher discount rate of 12%. That being said, their discount limit is also capped at RM8 per charging session.
If you are a CIMB Visa cardholder, then you are eligible for the maximum 22% discount. Similarly, your discount cap is much higher at RM16 per session.
There is one catch though: your charging fee has to be at least RM30 for the discount to kick in. CIMB and Visa cardholders can enjoy the discount on EV charging at selected TNB Electron sites until 23 January 2026.
Future TNB Electron sites that will support card payment
As noted earlier, TNB Electron Juru is just the beginning as TNBX already planning to install card payment terminals at other locations too. So far, the CPO has already earmarked the upcoming chargers at R&R Gurun Northbound and Southbound which will be opened to the public very soon.
TNBX is also planning to enable card payment options at two other existing TNB Electron locations including R&R Tapah Northbound and R&R Ayer Keroh Northbound. The rollout timeline was not revealed to us though.
Meanwhile, do also take note that TNBX has to deactivate the link between these chargers and the Go To-U app in order to accelerate and simplify the implementation of the card payment terminal. Hence, that is why TNB Electron Juru is labelled as “under maintenance” in the Go To-U app right now even though it is still accessible to users.
Once the card payment terminal is installed and activated on TNB Electron Gurun, Tapah, and Ayer Keroh, the same will happen to them. This does not mean that TNBX has switched camp though as these chargers will be available via the Go To-U app once again when the reintegration process is completed later this year.
