There’s a new media art festival happening here at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Organised by local new media art collective Filamen, Immersio 2024 is held at GMBB, showcasing innovative new media artworks from artists across Malaysia and the Southeast Asia (SEA) region.

What is this year’s Immersio exhibition about?

Immersio has been around since 2017. However, unlike previous editions of Immersio exhibitions held in years past, Immersio 2024 sports a new format featuring a three-part experience. Immersio 2024 delves into the central theme of “Maya”, derived from the Sanskrit word for “illusion” and “magic”, which also translates to “virtual” in Bahasa Melayu. The new media art exhibition combines elements of the region’s rich tapestry of history, myths, cultural diversity, and environment, along with technology and imagination.

Where and when is Immersio 2024 happening?

The Immersio 2024 new media art festival will be held between the 22nd of November and the 22nd of December 2024, specifically at GMBB, Level 5, No. 2, Jalan Robertson, Bukit Bintang, 50150 Kuala Lumpur.

You may visit the art exhibition between 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM, Tuesdays through Sundays (closed on Mondays) during the dates mentioned above. Note that the exhibition is closed for lunchtime between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM.

What about ticket prices?

Ticket prices for Immersio 2024 are as follows:

  • Normal admission – RM20
  • Kids below the age of 12, senior citizens, and PWD community – RM5
  • Group of 5 – RM80
  • Group of 10 – RM150

You can purchase your tickets via this link. For more information, you may also check out Filamen’s official Instagram page.

What can you expect to see at Immersio 2024?

Immersio is showcasing over 50 digital artworks and media art installations from 32 artists and collectives across Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The new media art festival introduces a triple-header experience, featuring the Maya Exhibition, Malaysia and Southeast Asia Collectives, and iNYALA.

Curated by Koh Kai Ting, the Maya Exhibition explores the concept of “Maya”. It invites audiences to examine the invisible interactions between technology and tradition and is structured around four thematic frameworks – Chronopolitics, Quest, Diaspora, and Symbiosis. Each framework offers a lens to reimagine our social and cultural structures in Southeast Asia.

The Malaysia and Southeast Asia Collectives, on the other hand, present curated spaces for individual collectives, each from a different country and state of Malaysia. These spaces reflect the vibrant artistic diversity across the region, with each collective bringing forward a unique interpretation of “Maya”, showcasing how cultural futurism’s narratives are reimagined through the lens of technology.

iNYALA, a dedicated section focusing on student works from The One Academy, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), showcases the fresh perspectives of the next generation of artists, whilst offering a platform for innovative ideas and experimentation. This space further underscores Filamen’s commitment to nurturing and celebrating the innovative voices of new media art talent.
