The day has finally arrived and Xiaomi has set a new lap record at the Nürburgring with its Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Prototype. According to Xiaomi, the SU7 Ultra Prototype completed the lap in just 6 minutes and 46.874 seconds, making it the fastest four-door car in Nürburgring Nordschleife history.

This is quite an impressive feat considering the SU7 is the first EV introduced by the smartphone maker late last year.

For context, the SU7 Ultra Prototype’s lap time of 6:46.874 is quicker than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach Package (6:47.25).

The previous fastest four-door car record at the 20.8km track was clocked by a Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special in 2017 with a lap time of 6:57.578. However, like the Subaru, it is worth noting that Xiaomi’s EV record is categorised as a non-series or non-road-legal lap record.

For the production or road-legal category, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package holds the Nürburgring Nordschleife’s fastest four-door car record at 7:07.55, followed by the Porsche Taycan Turbo S (7:33.35) and the Porsche Taycan Turbo (7.42.34).

When it comes to fully electric vehicles, the fastest lap record is held by the Volkswagen ID.R at 5:19.546, followed by the Lotus Evija X at 6:40:33 and the NIO EP9 (6:45.90).

Xiaomi has been attempting to set the lap record since early October. According to the company’s CEO Lei Jun, they booked the track time for 9th and 10th October but were hindered by unfavourable weather conditions.

Eventually, they managed to secure an hour window between 11am to 12pm on the 28th October and the SU7 Ultra Prototype driven by David Pittard crossed the finish line at 11:56am. The lap time was confirmed by Nürburgring officials at 6:50pm on the same evening.

From the video, the SU7 Ultra managed to hit a peak speed of 342km/h. You can watch the full unedited clip of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra’s lap record below:

Xiaomi is expected to reveal the production version of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra later this evening at 7pm. As teased by Leijun, the production model will feature Akebono Carbon Ceramic brakes and Bilstein EVO T1 performance suspension.

To recap, the Prototype EV boasts a tri-motor setup that produces a combined 1548 PS (1526hp) and claims to offer a 0-100km/h time of just 1.96 seconds. Xiaomi has managed to shave the weight down to 1900kg with the use of 100% carbon fibre for 24 body panels.

As announced by Leijun in July, he expects to set a production lap time by next year.
