Volvo EX30 is finally coming to Malaysia. The confirmation came in the form of a new section on Volvo Malaysia’s official website that is dedicated to the new compact electric SUV.
At the moment, the new section acts more like a teaser for the upcoming arrival of EX30 in our market and you are also able to register your interest through the site. Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has also posted a separate video teaser on its official Facebook page.
Volvo EX30’s Malaysian release is a long time coming
Originally launched in June last year, VCM actually confirmed its plan to release the electric SUV in Malaysia over a year ago. At the time, the company’s Managing Director, Charles Frump said that EX30 would be released in Malaysia much earlier than its larger sibling, the EX90.
Charles also noted that the EX30 will be locally assembled in Malaysia. True enough, there have been recent sightings of the SUV outside of Volvo’s plant in Shah Alam and VCM’s Petaling Jaya office.
Volvo EX30 quick specs
Volvo said that the EX30 is the quickest car that it has ever produced. Not only that, the company even boldly claimed that the SUV is quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera.
This is due to its ability to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. However, this only applies to the EX30 Twin Motor Performance which features two electric motors that deliver a combined output of 315kW (422hp) alongside 543Nm of torque.
On the other hand, the EX30 Single Motor variants take slightly more time to go from 0-100km/h although still fairly quick at 5.3 seconds. The electric motor in these variants has a maximum output of 203kW (272hp) and 342Nm of torque.
All the variants of the EX30 have the same top speed of 180km/h. In terms of battery, the Twin Motor Performance and Single Motor Extended Range (ER) versions are fitted with a 69kWh NMC battery while the Single Motor Standard model has a 51kWh LFP battery.
The standard version of the EX30 Single Motor can deliver a WLTP-rated range of 344km while the ER counterpart offers up to 476km of range. The high output nature of the EX30 Dual Motor Performance does affect its range although it still can deliver a WLTP-rated range of up to 450km.
Charging-wise, the standard Single Motor variant supports DC charging speed of up to 150kW while the Single Motor ER and Dual Motor Performance can go up to 175kW. When it comes to the AC onboard charger, the standard Single Motor option comes with a 11kW 3-phase unit unlike its two high-end counterparts which are fitted with a 22kW 3-phase module.
Will Volvo EX30 costs less than RM200k in Malaysia?
Over in Thailand, the EX30 Single Motor ER can be obtained with a starting price of THB1.59 million (~RM200,718) for the Core trim as well as the Ultra trim which starts at THB1.79 million (~RM225,966). The EX30 Twin Motor Performance is available only in Ultra trim with a starting price of THB1.89 million (~RM238,590).
In Indonesia, only the Single Motor models are available there. The standard version is called EX30 Plus starts and has a starting price of IDR890 million (~RM247,898) while the ER version which is known as EX30 Ultra starts from IDR1.1 billion (~RM306,390).
So, how much is the EX30 going to cost in Malaysia then? Well, we will find out the answer soon enough at the upcoming launch event.
