WeChat Pay Malaysia (also known as WeChat Pay MY) will cease operations just 6 years after it commenced operations in our local market. This is Tencent’s eWallet offering for local Malaysian users which uses the Ringgit Malaysia currency.

The cessation of WeChat Pay Malaysia doesn’t affect existing WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay) acceptance for travellers or tourists from Mainland China. Mainland China users are using the Chinese Renminbi-based WeChat Pay eWallet and they can continue to enjoy the service as usual.

WeChat Pay MY to cease operations

According to the notice posted on WeChat Pay the decision to cease operations is due to their business strategy adjustment and they thank the support received throughout the years. Registrations for new eWallet users for WeChat Pay MY will no longer be available from 1st August 2024, followed by the discontinuation of payment services from 1st September 2024.

Existing WeChat Pay MY users will be able to withdraw the balance in their eWallet via the eWallet portal until 31st December 2024. If you miss the deadline, users can still opt for a special withdrawal arrangement from 1st January 2025.
