Xiaomi has officially revealed the Mix Flip alongside the 4th generation Mix Fold. Being their first-ever flip phone, Xiaomi says the Mix Flip excels in performance, battery and network functionality, breaking the stereotype that flip phones offer compromised capabilities. The biggest highlight is its cover screen which provides an expansive edge-to-edge display which puts its flip phone rivals to shame.
Xiaomi’s first attempt at a flip phone
Xiaomi has taken the time to release its flip phone and the first iteration appears to have ticked all the right boxes. Unlike the mainstream flip phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Oppo Find N3 Flip, the other screen covers the entire front cover which gives it a more practical and usable display.
We’ve seen a similar approach on the latest Motorola Razr but the Mix Flip’s camera cutouts on the screen are bigger. However, the MIX Flip’s cover display has a quad-curved design which gives it a more symmetrical look.
The cover display uses a 4.01″ AMOLED panel which boasts a high pixel density of 460ppi, a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Besides having an array of fun and cool dynamic lock screens on the cover, the Mix Flip cover display supports over 200 apps and it even shows a full-sized keyboard if you’re holding the device unfolded in the right orientation.
Because of the larger and more usable display, Mix Flip users can get a clear glance at their notifications and run most day-to-day tasks without unfolding the device.
On the inside, it gets a 6.86″ 120Hz AMOLED display which also boasts a 1.5K resolution, pixel density of 460ppi and a variable 1-120Hz refresh rate.
To ensure optimal wireless reception, the MIX Flip features an improved antenna hardware architecture enhanced by Xiaomi’s Surge T1 signal enhancement chip. Regardless of how you hold the Flip, the grip recognition algorithm will intelligently select the optimal antennas to prevent instances of weak signals.
Xiaomi 14 hardware in a compact form factor
Putting flagship hardware with an efficient thermal management system is no easy fit for a compact form factor. For a no-comprise flagship experience, the Mix Flip is equipped with similar performance hardware components as the Xiaomi 14. It runs on the top-of-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.
To keep things cool during heavy-duty tasks, Xiaomi has managed to fit a 3D vapour chamber that offers a 3500mm² VC area which a “staircase” design which helps to quickly dissipate heat and evenly conducts it through the double-layer graphite over the hinge. It added that they have used the Xiaomi SU7’s “aerogel” thermal insulation material near the inner side of the display to block heat transfer to the display.
Measuring 74.02mm in length with a thickness of 15.99mm when folded (7.8mm when unfolded), the Mix Flip is not as compact as the Z Flip 6. It is also slightly heavier at 192g. The extra bulk isn’t an issue considering that the Mix Flip offers a generous 4,780mAh battery which is significantly more than the 4,000mAh battery on Samsung’s latest flip phone. Topping up the battery is quicker too, as it supports 67W fast charging via USB-C.
Leica cameras with 2x optical zoom
In the camera department, the Mix Flip features a Leica dual-camera setup with Summilux lenses. The main cameras on the cover consist of a 50MP main shooter with a Light Fusion 800 sensor and a secondary 50MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. To deliver a telephoto camera on a compact device, the Mix flip uses a 47mm Leica floating telephoto lens with a minimum focusing distance of 9cm.
Similar to its other flagship smartphones with Leica cameras, you also get to choose between Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant. With the large cover display, taking selfies is not only just effortless but you’re taking them with the best cameras on the device.
