EV owners now have yet another charging spot to utilise when travelling through the West Coast Expressway (WCE). Deployed by DC Handal who was also responsible for the charger at the highway’s Assam Jawa Toll Plaza, the new EV charger is located at the Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza Southbound.
This is probably the fastest EV charger in Malaysia
What is interesting about the new EV charger at the Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza Southbound is that it can deliver a DC charging speed of up to 400kW. This generally made the site the fastest public EV charger in Malaysia which previously belonged to the Shell Recharge Genting Highlands EV charging hub that maxed out at 360kW.
In terms of hardware, DC Handal has once again opted for the Kempower Satellite Charging System. The setup at the Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza consisted of a liquid-cooled charging satellite while there are also three other standard charging satellites.
Based on the photos of the site that were shared on PlugShare, all four charging satellites are capable of delivering up to 400kW for EVs with 800V architecture. For EVs that have 400V architecture, the DC charging speed maxes out at 220kW.
That being said, one has to utilise the liquid-cooled satellite to obtain sustained high speed charging. According to Kempower’s spec sheet, the non-liquid cooled charging satellites can only sustain the peak 500A current rating for 10 minutes.
No EV in Malaysia can support 400kW, so why DC Handal go overboard?
Yes, you are right: there is no EV in Malaysia at the moment that can support a DC charging speed of 400kW. In fact, the Porsche Taycan which has 800V architecture can only go up to 270kW.
However, the Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza setup has a dynamic power sharing capability. With a 400kW setup, the site can deliver up to 100kW per charging satellite if all four charging bays are fully occupied which is still quite decent.
The charging fee is still acceptable
Despite being the fastest EV charger in the country at the moment, the charging fee for the DC Handal’s new 400kW charger at WCE Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza remains grounded. Specifically, it costs RM1.50 per kWh to utilise the charger.
Similar to other DC Handal sites, the main payment method for the chargers at Taiping Selatan Toll Plaza is a credit or debit card via the payment terminal that is located between charging satellites 2 and 3. Alternatively, you can also activate and pay for your charging session through the ChargEV or JomCharge app.
