Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) and Ericsson have successfully trialled a Multi-Band Booster solution which aims to boost the capacity, reach and coverage of the 5G network. The solution combines the characteristics of traditional microwave (6-42GHz) with E-Band (70/80GHz) to extend 5G coverage across longer distances and wider geographical areas.
According to Ericsson, DNB’s 5G network is already ranked at the top for its performance as it was recognised as the world’s most consistent network by Ookla. It added that the Multi-band Booster will enable it to evolve its capabilities further as demands on it increase.
The Multi-band Boosters solution combines the high availability of lower frequency microwave bands with the high capacity of the E-band. When deployed, the solution can help extend the reach and boost the overall 5G network capacity.
It added that with the combination of the high data throughput, low latency coverage, reliability and simplified outdoor deployment, the solution from Ericsson makes it suitable for applications like fixed wireless access and requirements introduced by 5G Advanced. The solution will also enhance the amount of data that can be transmitted between cell towers and Mobile Network Operator cores in the network.
Ericsson added that the solution will allow 5G and 5G Advanced services to be introduced faster for the benefit of consumers in rural and underserved communities. For enterprise users, it can be used to connect different sites within the enterprise network with high capacity and minimum indoor footprint without waiting for fibre to be available. In addition, the fully outdoor solution claims to do away with the need for a room or cooling requirements, making it greener and energy-sustainable.
The solution utilises Ericsson’s MINI-LINK 6352 for E-band to be combined with traditional microwave bands (using Ericsson’s MINI-LINK 6365 + MINI-LINK 6371) to leverage the strengths of both frequency ranges. Ericsson says the combination will extend the reach and capacity of microwave links and significantly improve the use of spectrum. It added that the reach of the E-band is extended up to two times while the capacity of traditional band is enhanced by five times.
Commenting on the trial, Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh David Hägerbro says, “The world-class 5G network in Malaysia and this achievement makes it the first in the region to be able to deliver the benefits of 5G faster, wider and even more efficiently. The capacity and speed that can be delivered means that the network is capable of supporting the demands of 5G as
the technology evolves.”
He added, “The success of this live test, that was done on a congested site, shows that the DNB 5G network is ready with advanced 5G solutions that will open up new services for both consumers and enterprises, even in rural areas. This will accelerate the digitalisation journey for enterprises while allowing the digital divide to be bridged even faster. The ability to do so will be part of how Ericsson works to propel Malaysia towards becoming a leading digital nation.”
