[ UPDATE 4/05/2024 ] Here’s how to check if your Omoda 5 is affected by the recall.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued an immediate recall notice for 600 Chery Omoda 5 units in Malaysia following a safety incident involving a broken rear axle. Last weekend, a Facebook post shared by an owner went viral after her petrol-powered sports utility vehicle (SUV)’s rear axle snapped while driving.

JPJ ordered Chery to conduct a thorough investigation on Omoda 5 issue

As reported by Bernama, JPJ in a statement said they have summoned Chery Corporate Malaysia Sdn Bhd to conduct a thorough investigation and gather additional information to ensure the safety of both vehicle owners and road users. It said that Omoda 5 owners will be contacted by Chery to schedule their inspection slots. Alternatively, they can walk-in into any authorised Chery service centre nationwide.

JPJ added that it will monitor the Omoda 5 recall process and is committed to ensuring all affected units are inspected, confirmed safe and the axle replacement process is carried out. It also advised all Omoda 5 owners to make arrangements to facilitate the recall process and vehicle inspections as soon as possible.

Customers can contact Chery Malaysia’s customer service hotline at 03-2771 7070 or visit their nearest Chery Auto Malaysia sales centre for further information.

On 30th April, Chery Malaysia issued a statement confirming that 600 vehicles are potentially affected due to the facility upgrade exercise. It added that as a precautionary measure, Chery Auto Malaysia is reaching out to customers of the affected Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) for a detailed inspection to resolve all technical component issues.

Following the public statement issued by Chery, the affected owner had updated on Facebook that she has yet to receive an official report on her Omoda 5 issue nor has Chery discussed with her on the next steps to settle the matter. She also alleged that repair works were done without her consent and was told to collect her vehicle on Monday evening.
