This post is brought to you by vivo.
vivo Malaysia launched the vivo V30 Pro, the latest model in the V series. It features triple 50MP cameras with ZEISS optics and the new Aura Light 3.0. Not only that, but the rest of the phone also received improvements and refinements in key areas that add to the overall experience of using the phone.
So let’s take a look at these upgrades and refinements on the vivo V30 Pro starting with the triple 50MP cameras featuring ZEISS optics based on the flagship vivo X series.
Triple 50MP cameras with ZEISS optics
A first for the vivo V series, all three cameras on the vivo V30 Pro are co-engineered with ZEISS and meet their professional-grade optics standards. To achieve this, both vivo and ZEISS combined their respective expertise in system engineering and professional photography. Not only that, but all three cameras use a high-resolution, 50MP sensor.
Since the vivo V30 Pro is geared more towards portrait photography, we’ll start with the 50MP Professional Portrait camera with a 50mm equivalent focal length. This translates into a 2x optical zoom compared to the primary camera, making it ideal for close-up shots without getting too near to your subject.
Moreover, the longer focal length also creates a natural shallow depth field on the background. Thanks to the high 50MP resolution, your portrait shots will be sharper, brighter, and more colourful.
Complementing the portrait camera is the updated Aura Light Portrait 3.0 lighting system. For those new to the vivo V series, the Aura Light Portrait is a fill light that is built into the phone and was first introduced on the vivo V27. Its purpose is to reduce the contrast and shadows created by the primary light on your subject.
In addition, the light can illuminate the subject from a range of colour temperatures between warm and cold. You can either let the phone figure out the ideal colour temperature based on the scene or select the desired value yourself.
Now in its third version on the vivo V30 Pro, the Aura Light Portrait 3.0 offers softer, more even, and smarter lighting. New for this version is a rounded rectangular shape which provides a larger light area than the previous circular design. This illuminates more objects in the foreground and background, providing a better colour balance between the subject and the environment.
Compared to a camera flash on most smartphones in this class, the Aura Light Portrait 3.0 provides softer illumination that doesn’t overpower the ambient lighting of the scene. However, it is still bright enough to light up your subject and bring out their facial features.
Besides that, there are new smart features embedded into the Aura Light Portrait 3.0 like recommendations to turn on the light based on the scene. It can also intelligently adjust the brightness of the light according to the subject’s distance from the phone.
Moving on to the main camera, there’s a 50MP VCS True Color unit using a SONY IMX920 module with a 1/1.49-inch sensor size, the largest on a V series to date. With the vivo Color System (VCS) technology, colour reproduction is improved by 15% while image clarity sees a 25% increase compared to its predecessor.
Further improving image quality is optical image stabilisation (OIS) which compensates for shakiness. The benefits of OIS are further amplified when shooting in low-light environments such as at night. Since the shutter needs to stay open for longer to capture more light, OIS helps to keep the camera sensor as steady as possible, resulting in a clearer photo.
Rounding up the camera system on the vivo V30 Pro is the ultra-wide-angle camera. Unlike most smartphones that feature an 8MP resolution for the ultra-wide-angle camera in this class, the vivo V30 Pro utilises a relatively massive 50MP camera.
A 119-degree field of view lets you capture vast landscapes or a huge group of people. Seeing how the vivo V30 Pro is a portrait-centric phone, it has an AI Group Portrait feature that can separate the subjects from the background to apply a bokeh effect.
vivo and ZEISS colour tuning and bokeh effects
A photo might hold a thousand words but it’s the colours that move people emotionally. As such, the vivo V30 Pro features three colour profiles from vivo and ZEISS for you to choose from based on the story you want to tell with your photo.
ZEISS Natural Color is a joint effort of vivo and ZEISS and is designed to represent the colours of the image in their most authentic form. It’s a neutral colour profile that is best suited for emphasising the subject.
Tuned by vivo’s photography team, the vivo Textured Colors profile pays tribute to classic photography styles. According to the smartphone maker, it offers a range of rich and delicate colours that capture the emotion of the moment.
For those looking for a striking photo, the vivo Vivid Color profile allows you to capture positive, vivid, and bright colour tones. This colour profile has been continuously optimised and tuned for four years by vivo. If the scene contains a range of colours, this profile will highlight their vividness.
Then there are the bokeh effects inspired by iconic ZEISS lenses like the ZEISS Biotar Style Bokeh based on the ZEISS Contax Biotar lens with f/1.5 aperture and 75mm focal length. The out-of-focus background displays a swirly bokeh and olive-shaped flares with sharp edges.
Next up is the ZEISS Planar Style Bokeh, inspired by the ZEISS Planar lens with an f/2.0 aperture and 80mm focal length. It produces a classic bokeh effect with clear and distinct flare edges.
Another option is the ZEISS Distagon Style Bokeh cantered around the ZEISS Contax lens with a f/2.0 aperture and 28mm focal length which simulates the effects of hexagon aperture blades.
Finally, inspired by the ZEISS Sonnar lens with an f/2.8 aperture and 180mm focal length, the ZEISS Sonnar Style Bokeh generates a creamy bokeh effect.
But for the artistic among you, there’s a ZEISS Cinematic Style Bokeh which shoots in a wide aspect ratio of 2.39:1 for that cinematic look and feel. Inspired by the anamorphic lens bokeh effect, it warps the lights in the background into an oval shape.
Elegant design with a premium build
The vivo V30 Pro itself is just as striking as the photos it takes. Available in two colours, each option provides a distinct elegant design.
For those looking to attract attention, the Petal White colour is the colour for you. The design mimics the nuance in the colour gradient of a blooming flower petal, transitioning from white to blue. On top of that, vivo engraved 13 million tangent lines into the surface using photolithography to represent the veins on a flower petal.
Meanwhile, the Noble Black colour offers an understated design for those looking to stay silent. However, shift the phone under the light and you’ll notice the surface shimmer. To achieve this, vivo employed an etching liquid that transforms the microscopic crystal on the surface of the Fluorite AG glass into prism-like structures that reflect light.
Regardless of which colour you opt for, the back panel curves into the side frame to meet the 3D cushioned curved screen with a 1.5K AMOLED display featuring a 120Hz refresh rate. When measured, the phone comes in at 7.45mm thick, which is all the more impressive considering it packs a huge 5,000mAh battery. This makes the vivo V30 Pro the thinnest phone with a 5,000mAh battery on the market today.
vivo commits to over 4 years of smooth experience
Great everyday performance starts with a capable processor which in the case of the vivo V30 Pro is a Dimensity 8200. It is paired with 512GB of storage and 12GB of RAM which can be increased by up to another 12GB by converting the storage into virtual RAM. With this, storage and RAM become the least of your concerns.
Powering the phone is a large 5,000mAh battery and when coupled with the power efficiencies of the Dimensity 8200 processor, you get longer usage between charges. When the battery does eventually run low, the 80W FlashCharge will get the battery back to 100% in around 46 minutes.
vivo says that the battery life is extended to twice the industry standard with the vivo V30 Pro maintaining a battery health above 80% after 1,600 charge and discharge cycles or approximately 4 years of typical usage.
Combine all these with software optimisations and vivo assures you that the phone will deliver consistent performance for 50 months or over 4 years.
