Previously, Maxis offered its wireless 5G broadband plan with unlimited 5G and 4G data for a hefty RM158/month. Now, the green telco has revamped its 5G Home WiFi offering which now starts from as low as RM69/month and you can choose to have uncapped speed, unlimited data or both.
New Maxis 5G Home WiFi
The Maxis 5G Home WiFi now comes in three options. The base 5G Home WiFi 69 plan priced at RM69/month comes with 120GB of 5G data with uncapped speeds. There’s no contract since there’s no 5G router offering.
If you need more than 120GB a month, there’s Maxis 5G Home WiFi 99 at RM99/month which offers unlimited 5G data but the speeds are capped up to 100Mbps. Maxis is bundling a free 5G router worth RM1,889 if you sign up for the plan on a 24-month contract.
For those who need unlimited 5G data and uncapped speeds, Maxis offers the 5G Home WiFi 139 at RM139/month. The plan is also available with a free 5G router if you sign up for a 24-month contract.
Maxis 5G Home WiFi 139 offers more perks
Maxis 5G Home WiFi 139 subscribers are also eligible to add home appliances on the Zerolution instalment contract. This includes Dyson products, Smart TVs, iPad and more.
If you add the Maxis 5G Home WiFi 139 plan as an existing Maxis Postpaid customer, you will also enjoy unlimited data for all lines within the same family. This is similar to the usual Maxis Postpaid + Fibre Broadband bundle.
Bundled 4G quota and FUP
While the plans are more affordable than its previous offering, take note that the allocated 4G data is only 30GB. This shouldn’t be an issue if your location has good and consistent 5G coverage, and the 4G connection only kicks in if there’s an issue with 5G.
Like most unlimited plans, the Maxis 5G Home WiFi service also has its own Fair Usage Policy (FUP). According to Maxis, excessive and abusive data usage is subjected to FUP to ensure a better experience for all users. It is stated that Maxis may at its absolute discretion limit the speed of video streaming and regular browsing if mobile data usage exceeds 1000GB. Since the FUP appears to be applied across the board, it would be better to just get the Maxis 5G Home WiFi 99 instead of Home WiFi 139 since the difference is just the speed cap.
If you need more quota, Maxis is offering an optional data pass with 10GB of 5G/4G data for RM15 that is valid for 30 days. At RM1.50 per GB, that’s very pricey considering U Mobile is offering an extra 1TB of quota for RM30 on U Home 5G.
Free 5G router on 24-month contract
From the looks of it, Maxis is bundling a ZTE MC801A 5G router that supports WiFi 6 and it is able to connect up to 30 devices. It claims to be able to deliver speeds of up to 300Mbps on 5G. With a wireless 5G broadband solution, there’s no need for complicated installations. Just place it near a window and simply plug and play.
According to the FAQ, an advance payment of one-month subscription may be applicable during sign-up. The plan is open to non-Malaysians but a deposit of RM300 is required.
Yes 5G and U Mobile are better value-for-money alternatives
At the moment, Yes 5G Wireless Broadband remains the most affordable option right now as you can get unlimited 5G data with no data or speed caps for RM58/month or RM99/month with a free 5G router bundle. They have recently introduced a newer Infinite Gateway Pro model (RRP: RM1,199) which supports up to 1.2Gbps and connects up to 128 devices.
Meanwhile, U Mobile offers its U Home 5G broadband plan for RM68/month which comes with 1TB of FUP. They have recently teased a new 5G router bundle that’s expected to be announced this month.
