If you’re driving an EV southbound from Perlis, Kedah or Penang, there’s a new 200kW DC Charger deployed by TNB Electron located at Juru R&R (Southbound). Not only this is currently the most powerful DC fast charger in Penang, but it is also TNB Electron’s first EV charging site that uses kWh-based pricing.

First TNB Electron DC Charger with kWh-based pricing

Unlike other TNB Electron DC chargers which are priced by the minute, the new 200kW DC charger at Juru Setia Sentral uses kWh-based pricing of RM1.50 per kWh. The DC charging rate is similar to DC Handal and most Gentari DC chargers. To activate the charger, you’ll have to use the Go To-U app which is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

With the Go To-U app, you can pre-book your charging session in advance or start charging immediately with pre-purchased blocks of 10 minutes. According to the app, a 10-minute charging session will cost an estimated RM7.50 while a 20-minute session would cost you RM15.00.

The TNB Electron Juru Setia Sentral charger has two CCS2 nozzles which can deliver up to 200kW of DC fast charging. It is set up for dynamic load sharing and this means a supported EV could receive up to 200kW if only one nozzle is in use or shared when two EVs are plugged in. The charger is located just in front of the KFC Setia Sentral drive-thru.

The Juru Setia Sentral location is currently the 4th TNB Electron location deployed so far. The other live TNB Electron locations are located at R&R Tapah Northbound, R&R Ayer Keroh Northbound and R&R Paka Northbound which are priced between RM2.05 to RM2.35 per minute.

Last year, TNB said it was committed to investing RM90 million in EV charging and it aims to have a total of 10 DC fast chargers on the North-South Expressway by the end of 2023. The other planned locations include Machap R&R (Southbound), Rawang R&R (Northbound), Gunung Semanggol R&R (Southbound), Gurun R&R (Northbound and Southbound) and Paka R&R (Southbound).

During IEMS 2023 which was held in October 2023, TNB showed a map of its planned EV charging stations for 2024/2025 which include a total of 37 DC fast chargers and 29 AC charge points. The planned new DC charging locations include six in Kelantan, 3 in Terengganu, 3 in Pahang, 3 in Kedah, 3 in Perak, 2 in Pulau Pinang and 2 in Johor.
