Allianz Malaysia has launched a new offering that is designed to cater for the needs of electric vehicle owners. Called the Allianz EV Shield, both battery-powered EV (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) owners are eligible for it.
Just to be clear, the Allianz EV Shield is not a stand-alone product. Instead, it is an additional set of coverage that is provided to EV owners who insured their vehicles under the Allianz Private Car (Comprehensive) Individual policy and it is available at no extra charge.
Allianz EV Shield covers damages and injuries from using EV chargers
Among the list of benefits that the new Allianz EV Shield offers includes coverage while using EV chargers regardless of whether home or public chargers. It is a rather interesting approach given that accidents involving EV chargers rarely happen.
If you somehow got injured or your EV is damaged while using a public EV charger, the EV Shield provides up to RM5,000 of compassionate cover. Of course, this is only valid if the EV charger has all the required approvals from authorities and you were using the charger the way that it is intended.
The EV Shield also has a personal liability coverage of up to RM50,000 if there is death or bodily injury to a third party from using the home wall charger to charge your EV in your residence. It also covers damages to third-party property as well.
It also includes coverage for home charger and portable charging cable
Meanwhile, the EV Shield also caters for the home wall charger itself. If it gets damaged by fire, lightning, natural disasters or even gets stolen outright, customers can claim up to RM15,000 to recoup the expenses incurred to repair or replace the charger.
Not only that, it also covers portable charging cables. You can claim up to RM2,000 if your cable is lost or damaged during a fire, theft, accidental collision, or overturning.
Access to 24-hour mobile EV charger and towing service when your EV is out of juice
Given its purpose, it is not surprising to see that the EV Shield will also offer assistance if your EV runs out of battery. Through Allianz’s new offering, customers have access to 24-hour towing service.
You can either have your EV towed by the Allianz Road Rangers to the nearest EV charging station or your home, whichever is nearest. For those who live in Klang Valley, they might be served by the Allianz EV Rangers instead who will come with mobile EV chargers to help charge your EV until you have enough power to drive to the nearest EV charger.
If the modus operandi of Allianz EV Rangers sounds familiar to you, that is because Allianz has apparently engaged the service of Gentari’s EV Charge Go to make this possible. If you are not familiar with the “powerbank on wheels”, check out our hands-on experience with it right here.
Free charging credit for early adopters of Allianz EV Shield
To celebrate the launch of EV Shield, Allianz is now offering free RM100 ChargEV charging credit to customers who insured their EVs with the Allianz Private Car (Comprehensive) Individual policy before the end of May 2024. However, do note that this offer is valid only for the first 3,000 customers.
