Plenty of leaks and tips have surfaced recently for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. Some of them are realistic, others are out of this world. Here are some of the more plausible tips we have gathered from multiple sources online for Samsung’s flagship foldable for 2024.
An improved hinge
With the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6, we may see better robustness as a new patent suggests that Samsung is trying to reduce the strain between the two halves of the phone by re-designing the hinge mechanism, making it a bit more balanced in the hand and while in use.
The hinge also looks thinner than before, so it should shave some grams from the final weight. The rebalancing of the two halves is being done via detents in the hinge itself. This allows the device to have several “fixed” positions as it moves through its arc of travel.
A new front cover screen size?
In the same patent, we see that the front cover screen is not as thin and tall as the previous models released in the market. It looks more like a standard candy bar rather than a remote control. Although there is no official confirmation yet, it may be that the Galaxy Z Fold series will finally feature a front cover screen with a more traditional form factor
This design approach is similar to the Oppo Find N3 or Honor Magic V2. For day-to-day use, the larger cover screen should be more comfortable and usable than the tall and narrow screen of the Z Fold series.
Built-in S-pen?
It has been leaked that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have enough space to store an S-Pen inside the device. This means that the phone’s capabilities will be significantly enhanced with the included S-Pen, and users will no longer need to carry a separate case for it. The S-Pen will be conveniently located within the phone itself.
The S-Pen that comes with the upcoming Z Fold 6 will be similar to the one in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The S-Pen will not be attached to the external case, making it more convenient for users who don’t want to carry the case everywhere. However, this might result in a smaller battery for the Z Fold 6 compared to the Z Fold 5. Despite this, some users may find it acceptable if it means they can have access to the S-Pen at all times.
No Camera Changes
If the leaks are correct, we will not see any major changes with the cameras on the Z Fold 6. The same camera setup from the Z Fold 5 will be carried over to the new model:
- 50MP Primary sensor with OIS
- 10MP Secondary telephoto with 3X optical zoom
- 12M Ultra-wide sensor
It appears that the camera system for the Z Fold 6 will not be upgraded. This is disappointing considering that it is a premium product and this will be the third model with the same imaging suite as the Z Fold 3. It is disheartening to see an important part of the premium experience is still lacking. While the new SoC from Qualcomm should offer better image processing, the fact remains that computational imaging can only go so far with nearly three-year-old parts, particularly with the zoom and ultra-wide cameras.
We should have some time before the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, and maybe Samsung will change everything from now till the launch date. Hopefully, the changes (if any) they make will be evolutionary, not refinement only.
