Gentari, the green energy arm of Petronas, is about to launch its very own app called Gentari Go. Gentari has teased that the app will be unveiled on 21st February 2024 but you can already download it from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
At the moment, Gentari which has over 300 EV charge points in Malaysia relies on Setel and JomCharge to activate its chargers. Their chargers are also accessible via ChargEV’s app through an EV roaming agreement. While Setel is developed under the same Petronas Group, Gentari’s annual membership plan is currently only available via the JomCharge app managed by EV Connection (EVC). On the other hand, if you want to earn reward points, you’ll have to use Setel which grants you Mesra points for every charging session.
Gentari Go app covers both EV charging and home solar
At the time of writing, anyone can download and register for a Gentari Go account which uses your mobile number as the login. However, you can’t use the app just yet as new users will be put in a queue before the account is activated. We registered our Gentari app on Friday and there are 248 people ahead of us. Today, there are 240 people ahead of us in the virtual queue.
Based on the screenshots, Gentari Go appears to have a clean interface similar to Setel but it is more focused on EV charging and solar. From the screenshots published on the app listing, the app will display a map of chargers around you as well as the listing of the nearest available chargers. The screenshot also provides a glimpse of international EV roaming where users can use the Gentari Go app to activate EV chargers in Thailand via EVolt, Singapore or even Indonesia.
Besides public EV chargers, the Gentari Go app also covers home energy solutions which include home chargers and solar systems. This would be interesting as EV owners would have a centralised view of their total energy consumption for their EV whether they charge at home, office or at other destinations. In case you didn’t know, Gentari currently offers home solar solutions with “zero upfront payment” in partnership with SOLS Energy.
In addition, the new Gentari Go app also has a loyalty programme called Gentari Rewards. From the screenshot, users can redeem their accumulated points for charging vouchers and more.
What happens to Setel and JomCharge?
If you still prefer to use Setel, JomCharge and ChargEV to activate Gentari chargers, it looks like you will still be able to do so due to the existing roaming arrangement. However, for those using JomCharge, there’s a slight change if you’re used to using the QR scanner to activate the chargers.
Just recently, we noticed that the Suria KLCC chargers were listed with a note “Chargers migrated to Gentari app effective 16/2/2024”. From our observation on-site, the Gentari chargers no longer carry the JomCharge QR code which was previously placed underneath the Setel charger number. Instead, there’s now a six-digit code (e.g. 223468) below the Gentari QR code.
If you look at the JomCharge app, the KLCC charger identifiers are now using the new 6-digit code format. Just make sure you activate the charger based on the new 6-digit label on the charge point.
For existing Gentari membership users, you can still enjoy the discounted rate from the JomCharge app. At the moment, it isn’t clear if the Gentari membership will be migrated to the new Gentari Go app. We expect more details to be revealed mid next week so stay tuned to us for more details.
