Hertz Malaysia has recently expanded its electric vehicle fleet by adding the BYD Dolphin. To mark the occasion, the car rental outfit which is under the management of Sime Darby Motors in Malaysia, is offering discounted rental fees for the electric hatchback until the end of this year.

Instead of the usual daily rental rate of RM320, customers are now able to book the BYD Dolphin from Hertz for RM175 per day. This discounted daily rental rate already includes sales and service tax as well as the fee for the Super Liability Reduction Option.

Customers will also be provided with unlimited mileage although the BYD Dolphin rental is only available in Klang Valley, Johor Bahru, and Penang. Here’s the list of participating Hertz Malaysia’s branches:

  • Downtown Johor Bahru
  • Downtown Kuala Lumpur
  • Downtown Penang
  • KLIA Terminal 1
  • KLIA Terminal 2
  • Skypark Subang

It is unclear which Dolphin variants that Hertz Malaysia provide to customers

Hertz Malaysia - BYD Dolphin EV Rental

While the promotion is rather interesting, there is some confusion in regards to which Dolphin variant Hertz Malaysia has in its EV rental fleet. For those who are not familiar with the SoyaCincau Awards’ Best EV of 2023, the Dolphin Standard Range (SR) offers a WLTP-rated range of 340km while the higher-end Extended Range (ER) variant can travel as far as 427km.

The imagery the company has used for its promotional poster featured a Dolphin ER which you can identify by the Surf Blue colourway that is exclusive to that particular variant. However, the Fleet Guide section of Hertz Malaysia’s website has a Dolphin SR instead.

BYD Dolphin SR in Sand White during the EV’s official launch in Malaysia last July.

The Dolphin SR shown on the website not only has the variant-exclusive Sand White colourway and wheel design but the site also said the EV has 180Nm of torque which is one of the SR’s characteristics as well.

We have tried to obtain further clarifications through Hertz Malaysia’s WhatsApp-based customer service line but the message we sent last week remained unanswered until today. So, if you are planning to rent a BYD Dolphin from Hertz Malaysia, make sure to verify which variant you will receive from the company.

Meanwhile, do check out our experience with the Dolphin SR right here if you want to know more about the EV. After that, you should also check our Dolphin ER hands-on right here for comparison.
