Seven months after the company began accepting orders for its EVs in our market, Tesla has finally activated its famed referral program in Malaysia. This was revealed through Tesla Malaysia’s official Instagram page last week.
Tesla Referral Program Malaysia credits
Also known as the Refer and Earn program, it allows Tesla owners to obtain referral credits when they help introduce Tesla products to their friends and family. The exact credit that owners would receive depends on the type of activities :
- 100 credits: Refer a friend to test drive session
- 5,000 credits: Refer a friend to purchase Tesla products
- 10,000 credits: Purchase additional Tesla products
Tesla Referral Program Malaysia seems incomplete
Aside from the referral credits that Tesla owners in Malaysia would receive when they participate in this program, Tesla Malaysia didn’t provide further explanation in its Instagram story. By using a referral link generated by an anonymous user, we managed to learn a few things about it though.
For one, the Malaysian referral mini-site is still missing the test drive link. Here’s a comparison between the site for Malaysian referral codes and its Singaporean counterpart:
Hence, it looks like local Tesla owners may not be able to obtain the test drive referral credits at the moment.
Meanwhile, Tesla Malaysia also did not mention in its Instagram post whether buyers would be provided with any sort of benefits if they purchase a Tesla product using the referral link that they got from their friends or family.
In some markets such as the United States, the buyer may receive certain freebies such as rebates for a new vehicle and free access to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature when they purchase a Tesla product using a referral link. The freebie that the buyer is supposed to receive would be noted in a pop-up prompt but as you can see below, the prompt on Tesla Malaysia’s website is rather empty:
Our quick check also showed similar behaviour for Tesla Singapore’s website. As for Thailand which is part of the three official Tesla markets in Southeast Asia, Tesla has yet to implement its referral program over there.
As for the 10,000 referral credits that were listed above, this is something that Tesla owners would be able to obtain by purchasing accessories or additional Tesla vehicles. Hence, Tesla owners don’t have to use any referral link to obtain the credits since they are technically already part of the Tesla community.
Tesla also didn’t publicly disclose the rewards that Tesla owners in Malaysia can redeem with their referral credits. From what we heard so far, the reward list currently consists of accessories for Model Y and pre-facelift Model 3.
Despite not being listed in the reward catalogue at the moment, there is a mention of Supercharging miles in the general Terms and Conditions for the referral program on Tesla Malaysia’s website. So, expect the reward list to change overtime.
Yes, Tesla referral credits do have an expiry date
The general Terms and Conditions document also noted that the credits would expire 12 months after you received them. If you receive additional credits, the expiry date will then be extended for another 12 months.
However, the Supercharging miles that you obtain through referral credit redemptions can only be used within 6 months. That being said, the expiry date would be extended by another 6 months if you redeem additional miles.
