Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has revealed that a special internet plan for delivery riders will be announced tomorrow. He said the plan targeted at pHailing riders (e.g. FoodPanda, Grab, etc) will come with special discounts and it is aimed at reducing their burden.
The plan will be unveiled tomorrow morning (23rd January 2024) and it is expected to be called Pakej P-Hailing Rahmah. Similar to the Pakej 5G Rahmah Plan, we expect the new plan to be made available by the five major telcos.
In his Facebook post, Fahmi shared a story about his conversation with a Foodpanda rider who was struggling with the cost of living. He said the rider had to borrow RM200 from a friend to pay his telco bills as it was a necessity for a rider.
Following the encounter, Fahmi said he started discussions with the telcos to come out with a plan that’s exclusive to pHailing riders only. After a series of talks, he is pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the telcos to come out with the special telco package for these riders.
Fahmi added that the government is aware of the struggles of the riders who have to work rain or shine to deliver food to customers and the move to introduce a new telco plan is a small win for workers in the pHailing industry.
Last year, the government introduced several targeted telco plans which include Pakej Perpaduan Prepaid, Pakej 5G Rahmah, and Pakej Perpaduan Jalur Lebar. These plans are mostly aimed at lower-income groups as well as targeted communities including senior citizens and veterans.
Recently, Grab Malaysia announced a restructuring for delivery fees and bonuses which caused dissatisfaction among delivery riders. It was reported that approximately 300 riders held a protest in front of Grab’s office last Friday to demand the return of their base RM5 fare for deliveries within the Klang Valley. It was also alleged that some Grab delivery riders complained that they had not received their bonuses.
