Apple has overtook Samsung as the number one smartphone vendor in the world for 2023. The last time this happened was 13 years ago in 2010; since then, Samsung has enjoyed the number one spot for over a decade.

Based on IDC data, Apple shipped 234.6 million smartphones last year, surpassing Samsung which only shipped 226.6 million smartphones during the same period. With that, Apple now holds about 20.1% of the smartphone market while Samsung is in second place with 19.4%.

In third place is Xiaomi, with a shipment of 145.9 million smartphones which translates to 12.5% of the smartphone market. Oppo shipped 103.1 million units while Transsion, the brand that manages Tecno and Infinix, shipped 94.9 million units making them fourth and fifth respectively. The last two brands hold 8.8% and 8.1% of the global smartphone share.

The brand from Cupertino did see a 3.7% increase in shipment numbers, but the biggest winner in the list was Transsion, which saw a 30.8% increase year-on-year. Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi meanwhile all saw drops in shipments last year. The Korean brand saw a drop of 13.6% in its year-on-year shipment while Xiaomi and Oppo experienced a 4.7% and 9.9% reduction in shipment number in that order.

2024 just started, so we do not know what the market will be like for the top five vendors in the coming 12 months. We are not even sure if there will be a shuffle of the top five vendors for 2024.
