This post is brought to you by vivo.
Are you looking for a camera that can help freeze the bittersweet moments in time? Well, to do that, it has to follow you everywhere. Therefore, there’s no camera better suited for that job than the ones on our smartphones. However, that can be said about any smartphone out there. So among a sea of mobile cameras, the vivo X100 Pro stands out by offering a camera system so well-tuned that you may never find a reason to upgrade anytime soon.
The X100 Pro is the latest smartphone to sit at the top of vivo’s hierarchy. As such, it is packing a camera system with the best technology vivo and renowned optics manufacturer, Zeiss have in their arsenal. There is a total of three 50MP cameras with different sensor sizes and focal lengths and a time-of-flight sensor.
Moreover, to reduce light reflection inside the primary camera when shooting at night, the X100 Pro features an upgraded Zeiss Transmission Layer (T*) coating on the lens. Besides that, the coating also increases light transmittance which improves colour reproduction by 20% compared to the previous version. Camera lenses with a complex anti-reflective coating are rare and the X100 Pro is one of them.
Images captured by the cameras are then processed by the vivo V3 image signal processor (ISP) using propriety algorithms with AI assistance. Thanks to the ISP, the X100 Pro can capture 4K video portraits and varying bokeh effects in photos while improving colour reproduction and image clarity.
Despite all the heavy lifting, the V3 ISP uses up to 30% less power than when these processes are done by the Dimensity 9300 SoC. Therefore, you get more extended use from the Blue Volt 5,000mAh battery.
But at the end of the day, numbers don’t mean anything if they can’t produce the expected results. So here are 5 types of photos that demonstrate the capabilities of the vivo X100 Pro’s camera system.
Capturing the sun and the moon
Capturing a sunset or sunrise comes with its own set of challenges given the brightness of the sun relative to the surroundings. A mobile camera needs to balance the exposure so that the sun is not blown out while details in the surroundings are not crushed in the dark.
At the same time, you have the warm colour palette of the sun to maintain without painting the entire scene yellow. That’s a lot of things to consider and the V3 ISP handles the complex situation gracefully, producing a stunning image.
When night falls, and there’s a full moon in the inky black sky, the Supermoon feature uses the 100x hybrid zoom to take a close-up shot of the moon. Considering how little light information there is, the X100 Pro combines the processing power of the V3 ISP with AI to boost clarity and reduce noise.
Night time photography
The X100 Pro has no issues when capturing night time photography thanks to the 1-inch sensor on the primary camera which is capable of capturing more light information. As a result, you get a brighter image with better colour reproduction while keeping noise to a minimum.
However, not every object in the scene is mindlessly brightened. Using the power of AI, the V3 ISP can identify objects in the scene and selectively control their brightness depending on the nature of the object.
So, objects that don’t emit light like people and walls are brightened while objects that do emit light like signboards and streetlights have their exposure controlled. Therefore, colours. details and subtle nuances in the scene are preserved as well as possible.
And when you couple that with optical image stabilisation, there is no need to use a tripod to get sharp images in low-light situations.
Zoom closer to a subject far away
You have the option of 2x digital zoom, 4.3x optical zoom, and hybrid zoom from 10x to 100x. When using the 4.3x optical zoom, the x100 Pro switches to the telephoto camera which uses Zeiss APO technology that helps to reduce chromatic aberrations when zoomed in. These chromatic aberrations can be green or purple edges around objects.
Zeiss APO technology uses apochromatic lenses to offer better colour correction capabilities. However, not all APO lenses are built equally. So the APO lens on the X100 Pro has been certified by Zeiss through their rigorous testing to offer the best control over chromatic aberrations.
Here is a photo of the KL Tower captured using 10x hybrid zoom at night. Despite the challenging lighting situation, the X100 Pro managed to capture the details in the structure and the colour of the materials and balance the exposure of the lights.
Super Macro shots
With a floating lens architecture in the telephoto camera, the focal length can be switched to focus on subjects up close. So now, the 4.3x telephoto camera can be used as a macro camera with a minimum focusing distance of 18cm.
Find the right angle, and your tiny subject will look bigger and more pronounced. Being this close, the camera can capture more details on the subject that would otherwise be invisible at a normal shooting distance. Details such as the texture and features on a Lego brick or the anther, filament, and pistil on a flower.
Using the V3 ISP and Zeiss optics, the X100 Pro can capture these subtle details with incredible precision, giving you elements in the photo to admire.
Portrait Photography with Flair
When you switch over to Portrait Mode, you have the option of choosing from a comprehensive list of preset focal lengths consisting of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm. These are not just random focal lengths but rather ones that are commonly used among professional photographers.
In addition, vivo and Zeiss co-developed multiple bokeh effects for the X100 Pro so that you can take a portrait photo that suits your creative taste. You have effects like Sonnar, Planar, Distagon, and many more that change the style of the lights at the back.
Even in the toughest of lighting conditions, the AI does an impressive job of separating the subject from the background, making portrait photography on the X100 Pro a delight. Portrait photos shot in front of a backlight come out well-exposed without blowing out the lights at the back.
