Ahead of Xiaomi’s EV tech event, Xiaomi Founder and CEO Lei Jun has revealed more details of its first-ever electric vehicle. While Xiaomi is known for its value-for-money smartphones and smart IoT devices, they are taking a leaf out of Tesla’s book by launching a high-end performance sedan as its first EV model. He has answered a couple of burning questions on social media platforms which include the meaning behind the SU7 name and the EV’s direct target market.
According to Lei Jun, the SU in SU7 stands for Speed Ultra and the first EV will be a performance beast. He explained that the first model reflects the company’s version for car manufacturing which combines technology, ecosystem and advanced mobile smart space, describing it as a high-performance tech ecosystem sedan.
Lei Jun also shared that the Xiaomi SU7 isn’t built to chase any specific competitor and is designed to fulfil the diverse aspirations of its customers. He said the SU7 was engineered to offer a level of driving performance that stands among the best in its class, including the Porsche Taycan Turbo. Being a tech company, they also prioritised intelligent technology by drawing inspiration from advanced car systems like the Tesla Model S. He said the SU7 offers advanced technologies and a supportive ecosystem to enhance your driving experience.
According to Lei Jun, tomorrow’s event won’t be a product release and the focus of the 3-hour session will be on EV technology. The Xiaomi EV showcase event is happening tomorrow, 28th December 2023 at 2pm (Malaysian time). He added that the SU7 is already in trial production and it is expected to hit the Chinese domestic market in a few months. No pricing details yet but he promised that it would exceed expectations.
As shown in a teaser above, the Xiaomi SU7 will be powered by Xiaomi HyperOS. This seems to be a single ecosystem which connects users with their personal devices, cars and homes.
The Xiaomi SU7 is expected to come in three variants including a higher Pro and Max models. The base RWD version is purported to come with a 220kW (295hp) motor while the all-wheel drive version gets twin motors producing up to 495kW (664hp). As a reference, the Porsche Taycan Turbo produces 671hp and 850Nm of torque, capable of doing 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line Taycan Turbo S boasts a higher 751hp and 1,050Nm of torque, with a century sprint done in just 2.8 seconds.
In terms of battery, the base model is said to be using BYD’s LFP battery pack while the higher-performance SU7 uses CATL’s NMC battery. Similar to most other high-end Chinese EVs, you can expect loads of sensors including loads of cameras and LiDAR sensors for autonomous self-driving.
