According to Malaysia Electric Vehicle Charging Network (MEVnet) data up till October, Perlis is the only state in Malaysia that does not have a public EV charger. That has just changed this week after Yinson GreenTech (YGT) activated its new ChargEV DC fast charger at the Starbucks Drive Thru (DT) Kangar Jaya.
The existence of the charger was first highlighted by Khairul Anuar and Azlan Mahmud on the Malaysian Electric Vehicle Owners Club (MyEVOC) Facebook group. The charger can now be accessed through the ChargEV app although it has not yet appeared on Setel or JomCharge despite the roaming agreement between all three Charge Point Operators (CPOs).
ChargEV Starbucks Kangar Jaya DT DC fast charger pricing
Currently, it costs RM1.20 per kWh to utilise the DC fast charger. This is the same pricing that YGT has implemented for the majority of DC fast chargers at Starbucks DT branches including in Alor Setar, Kuantan Indera Mahkota, Port Dickson, and many more.
The DC fast charger at Starbucks DT Kangar Jaya is equipped with two CCS2 connectors which means it can cater to two EVs simultaneously. However, expect your charging time to be slightly longer when its charging bays are fully occupied as the DC fast charger’s maximum output is 60kW.
Proximity to Malaysia-Thailand borders will benefit EV travellers
With the new charger at Starbucks DT Kangar Jaya, EV owners in Perlis no longer need to make the long journey to Alor Setar or Sg Petani to utilise a DC fast charger. Aside from Kangar Jaya, YGT has also just deployed another ChargEV DC fast charger at the Starbucks DT branch in Changlun which is still located in Kedah but much nearer to Perlis than the other cities we have mentioned earlier.
These newly deployed chargers in Kangar and Changlun would also be useful to EV owners travelling to or from Thailand given their proximity to the Malaysia-Thailand borders. That being said, we hope that more chargers will be deployed in Perlis very soon to ease the range anxiety faced by EV owners who live or travel through the state.
