More manufacturers are slowly revealing their own next generation flagship smartphones, and with Xiaomi and Vivo having already done so this time round its RedMagic’s turn to launch their new gaming smartphones. The RedMagic 9 Pro series not only packs the latest hardware under the hood, but also a camera bump-free design for a more industrial aesthetic to it.
RedMagic launched two smartphones in China, the RedMagic 9 Pro and the RedMagic 9 Pro+. However, they are for the most part the same phone, with minor differences in the battery department as well as RAM and storage configurations that we’ll touch on later. Overall, they look similar with a futuristic, cyberpunk-esque design that’s a hallmark of the RedMagic brand at this point. There’s a completely flat rear panel with no camera bump whatsoever, along with RGB lighting for the true gamer look.
The RedMagic 9 Pro series features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display using a BOE Q9+ panel pushing a resolution of 2480 x 1116p with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 960Hz touch sampling rate, a peak brightness of 1,600nits and 2,160Hz PWM dimming. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor here which apparently can double as a heart rate monitor, perhaps for you to check just how stressed out you where in those tense last moments of a match.
Powering the RedMagic 9 Pro series then is of course the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest mobile system-on-chip. That gets mated to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage on the RedMagic 9 Pro, with the RedMagic 9 Pro+ getting up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Cooling all of that silicon then is a new ICE 13 cooling system complete with its own cooling fan tucked away below the rear cameras, spinning at up to 22,000RPM and offering its own RGB lighting. The RedMagic 9 Pro series comes with Android 14 out of the box, skinned with their own RedMagic OS9 over it offering plenty of gaming-focused software features.
In the camera department meanwhile is are a pair of 50MP shooters, with the main 50MP camera using the Samsung GN5 sensor and packing optical image stabilisation while the secondary 50MP ultrawide uses the Samsung JN1 sensor instead. The under-display front camera meanwhile is a 16MP shooter for your selfie needs.
Other features of note include touch shoulder buttons on the side, as well as stereo speakers, an IR blaster as well as support for WiFI 7 and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless connectivity. The only other notable difference between the RedMagic 9 Pro and RedMagic 9 Pro+ then is that the RedMagic 9 Pro actually has a larger 6,500mAh battery compared to the 9 Pro+’s 5,500mAh battery. Why then the ‘Pro+’ moniker? That’s because the 9 Pro+ supports faster 165W fast charging, while the 9 Pro supports a mere 80W fast charging. The RedMagic 9 Pro series will come in Black, Transparent Black and Transparent Silver colour options, and weighs in at 229g and measures 8.9mm thick.

However, judging from their promotional pictures, it seems that for now RedMagic is only bringing the RedMagic 9 Pro to the global market. RedMagic added that following the global launch, it will be made available for purchase globally in January next year.
