Samsung is not making cheap foldables after all

Remember the report that says Samsung may launch cheaper foldables? So apparently that rumour is just that – a rumour, and Samsung has no plans to release cheaper foldables.

The company confirmed that the report is not true, and they are not looking at the affordable market for foldables.  In a statement to Korea JoongAng Daily, a Samsung Electronics spokesperson said, “We don’t plan to manufacture foldable smartphones that are priced in the midrange, and the latest rumours are groundless.”

The original report stemmed from a report from the research firm TrendForce, which suggests that Samsung is planning a mid-range foldable, in the USD 500 – USD 600 price range (about RM 2,355 to RM 2,826). There were also other reports suggesting the price is closer to the Galaxy A54, which is currently retailing at RM 1,899 in Malaysia.

In the same statement, Samsung did not discount the possibility of a fan edition (FE) version of its popular foldables would be produced. The FE models usually see some removal of certain features or a downgrade of specs to see the price fit a lower bracket.

When asked if an FE model might be in the works instead, the spokesperson said, “There’s nothing decided on the matter.” As it is not an outright denial, there is a small chance we may see a Galaxy Z Flip FE or Z Fold FE in the future.
