The Tesla Wall Connector that Tesla Malaysia has provided to early adopters of its EVs in Malaysia can only work with Tesla vehicles. That is unless customers are willing to void the charger’s warranty.
This was first highlighted by Facebook user Badrul Hisham through a post on the Malaysian Electric Vehicle Owners Club (MyEVOC) Facebook group. For clarity, this policy only applies to the complimentary Wall Connector that customers receive through Tesla Malaysia’s Home Charging Programme (HCP).
Tesla Wall Connector can generally support non-Tesla EVs
Truth to be told, the Wall Connector can actually be used to charge both Tesla and non-Tesla EVs. This way, you don’t have to buy separate AC chargers for your home.
That being said, one can easily set it to charge only Tesla vehicles through a feature called Access Control. You can also use the feature to limit the charger to be accessible only by certain Tesla vehicles by whitelisting their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
Hence, this Access Control feature can be quite useful if your Wall Connector is located in a more publicly accessible area such as an apartment’s parking lot.
The conditions attached to Tesla Malaysia’s free Wall Connector
Tesla Malaysia’s HCP was established by Tesla Malaysia specifically for customers who ordered a new Tesla vehicle from the company by 31 October 2023. Under HCP, customers will receive a free Tesla Wall Connector although they still have to pay for the installation fee themselves.
According to HCP’s General Conditions, the complimentary Wall Charger is covered by a 12-month warranty from Tesla Malaysia itself. At the same time, there is also a separate 12-month warranty on installation workmanship which is covered directly by the Tesla Approved Installer.
According to Badrul’s post which includes the above screenshot of his conversation with an unnamed Tesla Approved Installer, the Access Control setting for the complimentary Wall Charger will be set to “Only Tesla” upon deployment. Hence, the 12-month warranty would be rendered void if customers change it to other parameters.
This corresponds to one particular term that was listed in the Other Conditions section of the HCP’s General Conditions:
Customer cannot modify any part of the installation or wall connector settings; any unauthorized adjustments will void warranty eligibility.
We have since confirmed with Tesla Malaysia’s representative that the policy is indeed true. As noted earlier, it only applies to HCP’s complementary Wall Connector and is different from the warranty policy for Wall Connector that is sold to the public.
The standard warranty for Wall Connector
So, what does the standard warranty policy for the Wall Connector look like then?
According to the Gen 3 Wall Connector Installation Manual on Tesla Singapore’s website, the charger comes with a 48-month warranty when installed for personal use. The warranty duration for commercial usage is much shorter at 12 months.
For Malaysia, we were told that the market-specific warranty policy will only be announced once the Wall Connector is made available as a stand-alone product in the near future. However, the exact release date is still unknown for the time being.
