Apple Scary Fast event was shot entirely on iPhone 15 Pro Max – along with tonnes of expensive pro equipment

[ UPDATE 01/11/2023 10:31 ] The behind-the-scenes video is now available on Apple’s YouTube channel.

===

If you pay attention towards the end of the Apple Scary Fast broadcast this morning, then you may have spotted this interesting notice: “This event was shot on iPhone and edited on Mac. All presenters, locations, and drone footage shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max”. This might make you think that Apple was using just an iPhone to capture the amazingly produced video presentation.

We hate to burst your bubble but iPhone and Mac were not the only equipment that Apple used during the production of the presentation. The production team actually used various equipment for it, as shown by the behind-the-scenes video for the Apple Scary Fast presentation.

The existence of the video was first highlighted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by Ian Zelbo who was mainly known for his 3D design renders on 9to5Mac. Unfortunately, the video has since been made private although there was an Apple logo at the end of the video.

It has also highlighted some of the features of the iPhone 15 Pro Max including its low-light capability, direct video recording to a solid state drive via its USB-C, and Apple Log option. So, we will not be surprised if Apple decides to release this behind-the-scenes video at a later time.

While the video was quite brief at just over 2 minutes in length, it clearly showed the monumental amount of gear that was involved in the production of the Apple Scary Fast presentation.

For example, the video showed there were plenty of lights and dollies in front of Tim Cook during the event’s opening scene. There was even a huge lightbox being suspended overhead using a crane for that scene.

It is also interesting to note that the production team didn’t use the native camera app on the iPhone. Instead, the team uses the Blackmagic Camera app by Blackmagic Design which you can obtain for free for your own iPhone from the App Store.

The Blackmagic Camera app.

In fact, Apple acknowledged Blackmagic Design at the end of the video together with Beastgrip, presumably for the numerous iPhone rigs and mounts that were used during the production. Before we forget, Apple has also roped in three award-winning production companies, RadicalMedia, Company 3, and Method Studios to work on its Scary Fast presentation.

All in all, the iPhone 15 Pro Max may have all the bells and whistles to capture high-quality videos but it is just one part of the puzzle.
