Tune Talk has announced its latest prepaid offering called Pek Epik! which is said to have been carefully curated to cater to the surging demand for internet data especially among high-usage users. There are 4 Epik plan options priced between RM20 to RM50 per month but only one has 5G support.
For heavy data users, they are offering “unlimited 5G” for RM45/month and there’s also a 500GB option for RM50/month.
Tune Talk Epik Plans
On the surface, it looks pretty straightforward until you dig through the details. The Tune Talk Pek Epik offering has several layers of quota, speed-cap and Fair Usage Policy (FUP) which are not prominently displayed on their marketing materials.
Tune Talk EpikCall 20
The cheapest offering is EpikCall 20 at RM20/month which offers 10GB of 4G high-speed data with unlimited calls and “unlimited” data for chat and navigation (WhatsApp, WeChat and navigation within Google Maps). The EpikCall 20 plan is pretty good value for money for light data users who need unlimited calls but take note that there are several restrictions.
According to the T&C, the 10GB data offers video streaming in standard definition (360p) for apps such as YouTube, Netflix and Facebook. Meanwhile, the “unlimited” usage for Chat & Navigation is subject to an FUP of 50GB with “Standard Definition” quality. Fortunately, you can use the 10GB quota for hotspot usage.
Tune Talk Epik 35
If you need more data, there’s Epik 35 at RM35/month which offers 30GB of 4G high-speed data along with unlimited calls and “unlimited” social, chat and video apps. On top of that, the plan also comes with its own 5GB of high-speed hotspot data.
If you’re wondering why Tune Talk is advertising 130GB data for Epik 35 as shown above, that’s because the “extra” 100GB is for the FUP for the “unlimited” social, chat and video apps.
According to the T&C, the Social, Chat & Video Apps shall be subjected to the Fair Usage Policy at 100GB and it provides a high-definition experience which Tune Talk has defined as 720p resolution. Take note that the “unlimited” bonus internet for social, chat and video apps is only for on-device use and it can’t be shared via mobile hotspot.
Tune Talk Epik 5G 45
Next, there’s the Epik 5G 45 plan which is the only option that lets you enjoy faster 5G connectivity. Tune Talk advertises the plan with unlimited 5G, 30GB of internet and unlimited calls for RM45/month. According to the T&C, what you’re getting is 30GB of base 4G and 5G data and they have added a bonus “unlimited 5G” that’s subject to an FUP of 50GB per month.
As a promo starting from 27th October, Tune Talk has increased the monthly “unlimited 5G” FUP to 70GB until further notice. If you’ve depleted your 5G FUP, it will utilise your base 30GB quota. Any hotspot usage will share the 30GB base quota.
Tune Talk Epik 50
The highest offering is Epik 50 which offers a whopping 500GB of 4G data, unlimited calls and 5GB of hotspot for only RM50/month. Despite the huge amount of data, hotspot usage is limited to the dedicated hotspot allocation instead of the larger 500GB quota. If you hover over the ! symbol next to 500GB data listing on their website, it is stated “high definition experience” which we will explain in the next section.
Take note of the speed cap
Tune Talk has imposed speed caps for the Epik 5G 45 and Epik 50 plans which are hidden in the terms and conditions. For the 5G-enabled Epik 5G 45, your 5G connection is capped at 100Mbps, which is still plenty fast for the majority of people. However, for Epik 50, the 500GB 4G data is capped at 6Mbps.
If you need more data quota, Tune Talk does offer booster add-ons for both 4G and 5G options. For 4G, there’s a 1.5GB booster for RM3 and 10GB booster for RM10 (for the yearly plan). For 5G, a 3GB booster costs RM3 (1 day), 10GB booster costs RM12 (7 days) and 20GB booster for RM30 (follow plan validity).
According to the T&C, the Epik Pack comes with Free Basic Internet (FBI) 10GB which provides a throttled speed of 256kbps once you’ve exhausted all of your available data quota.
Despite the restrictions, the plans do offer pretty good value for money but the hidden layers of quotas and speed caps could have been advertised more transparently. For more info, you can visit Tune Talk’s Epik Prepaid page.
