Now that we have the official price for the Sony Playstation 5 Slim in Malaysia, perhaps you would like to know what is coming soon from Sony. Based on a patent spotted online first spotted by GameRant, we may see the gaming and audio worlds collide in your hands.
The DualSense controller is already a fully–featured gaming controller – with built-in speakers, touchpad, haptic triggers and even wireless capabilities with Bluetooth. A new patent may see Sony include another feature, recharging your earbuds in their next iteration of the famous controller.
The patent, titled ‘Integrated Headset Controller Storage and Connection’, was filed at the US Patent Office (USPO) by Sony in April 2022, and sees a future controller design that allows users to store, charge and pair wireless earbuds right in the body of the controller.
Not only that, but the patent also lists potential surfaces for storing the earbuds – it can be on the back, front or even in the grips of the controller.
The earphones will be paired to the controller and then to the game console. This will make pairing simpler and it will be one less wire to think about when you want to play your game in your living room, versus connecting wired earphones to the DualSense.
Additionally, the document says this technology would provide a “greater opportunity for the earbuds and the controller to work together.” For example, the patent states that the earbuds and the built-in microphone and speaker could be used together to “triangulate the audio source so that the audio can be processed to provide better audio quality.”
At this point, a patent is only a patent, and there is no confirmation that this will be made into a real product. Additionally, Sony already has options for wireless earbuds, including the recently announced InZone wireless earbuds.
We will have to wait and see if Sony will make this into a marketable product, or just file and forget the patent.
