Samsung just announced the next-gen Galaxy SmartTag2 – designed with enhancements to the Galaxy SmartTag line enabling new and better ways to keep track of important valuables.

The brand-new Lost Mode allows users to include their contact information via a message. Anyone who discovers the item with a Galaxy SmartTag2 attached can use their smartphone to scan it and see the message, along with the contact information. While it doesn’t use Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) like Apple, this does mean that the Lost Mode works with any mobile device with an NFC reader and a web browser.

The SmartTag2 now offers an improved Compass View feature, which uses UWB to show the direction and distance of the tag in relation to the user. This mode is available on any UWB-supported Galaxy smartphone, like the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung also upgraded the SmartThings Find app – with newly registered SmartTags installing a shortcut to the app on the user’s phone. Plus, the app now features a full-screen map view, and an intuitive interface to give a more seamless experience to the user. The SmartTag2 also automatically re-syncs with the user’s Samsung account when switching Galaxy smartphones.

The SmartTag2 retains a lot of the features of the previous models – both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and UWB capabilities allow Augmented Reality (AR) Find technology to visually guide users toward their item using their Samsung Galaxy smartphone camera. In addition, Galaxy SmartTag2 works within a maximum Bluetooth range of 120 meters.

The Power Saving Mode allows a longer battery life. The battery life can now be as long as 700 days in that mode. Even in normal mode, users can get up to 500 days of battery life. The tag still uses a CR2032 battery, but now you can leave it on the valuable item longer between battery changes.

Lastly, the SmartTag2 is now more compact and features a ring-shaped design for easier tagging of items. The loop has metal inside of the ring for better resilience while in use. The tag is now rated for IP67, for water and dust resistance.

There is no official availability or price for Malaysia as of yet, but the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 will be available globally starting from 10 October 2023.
