The Sunway Big Box Retail Park in Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, Johor has been revealed as the latest Tesla Supercharger spot in Malaysia. Not only that, the shopping mall has also been designated as a Tesla Destination Charging location.
This was confirmed by Tesla itself through an announcement on Tesla Malaysia’s website for an upcoming Model Y showcase event at the shopping mall this October. In general, Sunway Big Box Johor is the second Supercharger location in Malaysia after Pavilion KL.
In addition to that, it is also the second Destination Charging spot in the country that we know of so far, following the implementation at Sunway Putra Mall KL. It is also the first such deployment of Tesla charging infrastructure in Johor.
As Sunway was one of the major developers who signed a deal with Tesla, the location didn’t surprise us. However, it is interesting to see that Sunway Big Box Johor features both a Supercharger and Destination Charger unlike Pavilion KL and Sunway Putra Mall.
However, we have no knowledge of the setup that is going to be implemented over at Sunway Big Box Johor at the moment. This is because neither the mall’s Supercharger nor Destination Charger have been listed on Tesla’s website.
Tesla Supercharger is essentially a DC fast charger that can deliver up to 250kW of energy which is the maximum charging rate that Tesla Model Y and Model 3 Highland are able to support. The company claimed that Superchargers can add up to 270km of range within 15 minutes of charging time.
On the other hand, the main objective behind the Destination Charging infrastructure is to allow Tesla owners to charge their vehicles while they are working, running errands, enjoying leisure activities, or travelling. So, they would be at one particular location for an extended period which is why Destination Charging is usually located at commercial premises, restaurants, hotels, car parks, shopping malls, and other public locations.
In addition to that, it utilises the same Wall Connector AC charger that the company offers for home charging. Similar to Sunway Putra Mall KL, Tesla has not revealed the charging speed for the implementation at Sunway Big Box Johor but we expect it to match Model Y and Model 3’s maximum AC charging rate of 11kW.
