U Mobile has announced that they’re partnering up with Qualcomm and The Food Merchant, Malaysia’s first international premium grocer, to carry out a proof-of-concept trial with the TROLLEE P1 smart retail solution for shopping carts. Happening at The Food Merchant’s outlet at Pavilion Embassy, Jalan Ampang, the proof-of-concept trial is currently ongoing, and will last for a limited time only.

The TROLLEE P1 is essentially a smart trolley. It looks almost like any other shopping cart, except the fact that it has this giant touchscreen over where you’d normally be pushing your cart. According to U Mobile, with the TROLLEE P1, you’ll be able be able to look for products by category and get recommendations too simply by typing in what you’re looking for. There’s also a navigation feature on the TROLLEE P1 to help you pinpoint where exactly the item you’re looking for is located in the store.

On top of that, the TROLLEE P1 can help shoppers manage their shopping list and budget by scanning your groceries as you pick them up off the shelf. You’ll also get promotional ads on the screen for items on sale as you walk past them, thanks to the in-store positioning system. There’s even an augmented reality feature that provides you an immersive shopping experience complete with games and activities. And when you’re done shopping, you can also use the TROLLEE P1’s self-checkout feature for a more convenient and speedy way to pay for your groceries without needing to queue up at a counter.

“With the Malaysian retail industry rebounding so reassuringly post-pandemic, we believe that this is the best time for U Mobile to provide our connectivity expertise to power technologies that elevate the supermarket shopping experience for Malaysians.

Hence, we are delighted to partner Qualcomm and The Food Merchant on this initiative as the insights provided by their customers will be invaluable,” – Alex Tan, U Mobile Chief Sales Officer

The TROLLEE P1 also has benefits for retailers, with U Mobile claiming that it presents an opportunity for them to bridge the gap between the online and offline customer. This smart trolley is also able to grab and analyse data based on customer patterns and preferences, allowing the retailing to further improve their own loyalty rewards system, operational efficiency and deliver better targeted marketing content.

For those of you who will be at The Food Merchant to try out these smart shopping carts, U Mobile adds that you can provide your feedback on the experience by scanning the QR code shown on the TROLLEE P1 after you checkout.
