Shell in partnership with BYD has opened its largest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Shenzhen, China. In fact, this is also the world’s largest EV charging station with a total of 258 DC fast charging points. That’s triple the number of charging points of the largest Tesla Supercharger located in Arizona, USA.
According to Shell, the Shell Recharge Shenzhen Airport EV station which is located about 2.5km from the airport terminal building has served more than 3,300 EVs daily during its trial operations. For added convenience to EV drivers, the location offers Shell Select convenience retail, Shell Cafe, vending machines and a driver’s lounge.
In addition, the charging bays are covered and are equipped with rooftop solar panels that can generate about 300,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year which is utilised to charge the EVs. From what we can tell from the photos, the DC chargers are capable of delivering up to 250kW of fast charging.
Shell’s Global Executive Vice President for Mobility, István Kapitány, said “The opening of this new site is part of our ongoing commitment to meet the evolving needs of our customers in China. We know that EV drivers are looking for a charging experience that is fast, convenient and comfortable and this is reflected in the utilisation rates of our sites in China, which are two to three times the local industry average. China is one of the most important growth markets for Shell Mobility. We look forward to offering pleasant mobility experiences to more customers in China in the future.”
Last year, both Shell and BYD signed a strategic cooperation to accelerate energy transition and to improve the charging experience for both EV and Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles across China and Europe. The joint venture is expected to operate a network of more than 10,000 charging points in Shenzhen with a plan to expand to more locations in China. Both parties are also exploring opportunities to build Shell-BYD EV hubs in key European markets.
In Malaysia, Shell has several Shell Recharge DC Fast Charging locations along the North-South Expressway. Most of these DC chargers are 180kW units which cost RM4 per minute on a pay-per-use model. Porsche EV owners in Malaysia can enjoy a Platinum member subscription that provides a cheaper rate of RM2 per minute.
There hasn’t been much progress for new Shell Recharge locations with DC chargers in Malaysia. However, we recently spotted a new Shell Recharge location at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur located just next to the Tesla Supercharger.
