Thanks to leaked court documents from ongoing court case between the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Microsoft, we have the first look at the Xbox Series X refresh for 2024. In the same document, there are roadmaps for the company’s game console – with new storage options for new consoles sales starting from next year.
The new Xbox Series X will no longer look like a rectangular box – instead, it will have a cylindrical body instead. The cons of the new body design? Microsoft took out the disk drive from the Series X. The court documents list the Series X as having an internal 2TB storage, which is twice the current model’s available storage.
Not only the design has changed, but even the processor is set to see an upgrade. The refresh may include a new custom processor from AMD, with Zen 6 cores as well as Navi 5 GPU cores – both products which are still not on the market as of yet. Nothing is confirmed as of yet, but we may also see the beginnings of a refresh for the Sony PlayStation 5, as the SoCs in the current Microsoft and Sony flagship consoles are similar in specs.
Along with the console refresh, Microsoft is also releasing a new controller `that will be packaged with the refreshed Xbox Series X and new Series S shipments starting next year. The new controller, codenamed Sebille, is set to be announced later this year and will include an accelerometer for gyro support.
It will have a unique two-tone colour, and users can connect it directly to the cloud. It has Bluetooth 5.2 and an updated “Xbox Wireless 2” connection. In the specs sheet of the controller, Microsoft listed “precision haptic feedback” and “VCA haptics double as speakers” as notable features.
The new Xbox Series X is set to have the same launch price as the original Series X, at USD 499 (about RM 2,343.05) with a tentative launch date of around November 2024. There will also be a new Xbox Series S storage option expected to be launched a couple of months before the Series X refresh model.
