OM Systems has just announced an update to their rugged line of compact cameras, the Tough TG-7. Based on the TG-6 (which was launched way back in 2019), the new TG-7 may look like something from the last decade, but it is somewhat modern inside.
At the heart of the camera is a 12-megapixel Type 1/2.33 inch image sensor, and a 25-100mm f/2-4.9 lens. Yes, it may not sport a big 1-inch sensor or removable lens, but where else can you get that zoom range with an internal zoom mechanism? The TG-7’s lenses stay nice and flat even when zooming out, thanks to some nifty lens construction.
The TG-7 is also as rugged as ever – it Is waterproof down to 15 meters, shockproof against drops from 2.1 meters high, can withstand crushing force up to 100 kg, is freezeproof up to -10 degrees Celsius, and is also dustproof. Plus, the camera has an official IP68 rating. No other cameras in the market can go against that impressive list of features.
Plus, if you want to dive deeper, there is the optional PT-059 Underwater Housing. The TG-7 can now go down all the way to 45 meters under the sea, to capture images of Sebastian and friends. It also comes with a dedicated underwater shooting mode for crystal clear shots, along with the standard auto, P/A, scene, and microscope shooting modes.
If you like to take closeup photos, the microscope shooting mode is unique because it allows the TG-7 to capture subjects as close as 1cm from the front of the lens for impressive close-up photos.
For videos, the TG-7 records videos up to 4K30p, or 1080p video at up to 120 frames per second (fps). If you need faster recording, you can record 240 fps at 720p or 480 fps at 480p.
Something new on the TG-7 is the ability to shoot vertical videos without the need to tilt the camera sideways, and also interval shooting. The last item is handy for creating timelapse videos out in the wild. Additionally, OM Systems updated the camera with a USB-C port, instead of the USB-Micro in the TG-6. The same port is used to transfer data and charge the camera.
Included in the body is a GPS sensor that records data such as air temperature, water temperature, and altitude, including underwater depth by measuring air pressure – perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to log important data. The camera can also be remotely access for file transfer and remote shutter using the O.I Share app, connected using WiFi.
The OM Systems TG-7 will be available worldwide from 27 September for USD 549.99. (about RM 2,574.50). OMD World, the distributor for OM Systems cameras in Malaysia confirms that we will be getting it by the end of October.
