Visitors and tenants at Sunway City Kuala Lumpur can look forward to improved mobile reception as Sunway Group has appointed EdgePoint Infrastructure (EdgePoint) as their partner to deploy in-building coverage (IBC) systems that are 5G ready. The deployment of next-generation coverage systems aims to enable seamless mobile coverage throughout Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre and Sunway Medical Centre.
Sunway Group says they have an annual footfall of 42 million people throughout Sunway City Kuala Lumpur each year. The agreement with EdgePoint will also see similar IBC deployments across other Sunway-owned commercial properties.
EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd CEO Muniff Kamaruddin said, “We are pleased to be selected by Sunway Group as one of their preferred partners for In-Building Coverage (IBC) systems across its commercial properties, beginning with Sunway Pyramid. As an independent digital infrastructure company, EdgePoint has the operational readiness and financial capability for rolling out neutral IBC systems compatible with all Mobile Network Operators, in line with Sunway Group’s requirements. The success of this project with one of Southeast Asia’s leading conglomerates will further strengthen EdgePoint’s position as a next-generation infrastructure partner for corporations seeking to rise above the competition.”
Commenting on the agreement, Sunway Digital Wave Sdn Bhd CEO Anandan Balakrishnan, “Sunway understands that seamless connectivity is part and parcel of our customers’ lifestyle now, especially with the ubiquity of e-wallets as a payment option. We embarked on this effort to ensure our developments are equipped to provide the best possible connectivity at all times. At EdgePoint, we found a towerco partner that has the capacity to meet our exact requirements as well as the ability to onboard all Mobile Network Operators onto our communications infrastructure. Their industry insights, strong relationships and analytics-backed in-house design team will help us expand enhanced telecommunications infrastructure to other Sunway-owned commercial properties in the coming years.”
According to the joint-statement, the installation of IBC systems and adoption of 5G network technology builds upon Sunway’s digital transformation journey since 2000. The Group’s digital arm is accelerating digital adoption across its conglomerate’s business divisions and further integrating technology into Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, which is described as Malaysia’s first integrated green city. As part of its drive towards a smart sustainability city, it is also advancing its “15-minute city” model where people can easily navigate essential services and business premises within a 15-minute walk or bike ride.
EdgePoint is an ASEAN-focused telecommunications infrastructure company that currently operates 14,000 sites across Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Last year, EdgePoint and Edotco acquired close to 3,000 towers each in the Philippines in a deal worth PHP 77 billion (about RM6.3 billion).
