Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has officially announced the availability of Pakej 5G Rahmah which aims to provide affordable 5G postpaid plan and device bundles for the masses. The announcement was made just ahead of the Merdeka Day celebration.
60GB 5G Data for RM60
Under the Pakej 5G Rahmah, consumers can get at least 60GB of 5G data for RM60/month from CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia (Unifi Mobile) and YTL Communications (Yes 5G).
As we’ve highlighted previously, there are currently cheaper 5G plans in the market which offer greater value. Fahmi said RM60 for 60GB (RM1 per GB) is just the baseline data offering and all telcos are encouraged to provide better deals and data packages for consumers. This means telcos can offer cheaper data plans below RM1 per GB as well as device bundles that are cheaper than RM240. He said some telcos such as Yes 5G currently offer cheaper 5G postpaid plans with 100GB of 5G data for only RM35/month. The Pakej 5G Rahmah plans are open to all Malaysians regardless of income status.
5G smartphones with 2-year warranty
Under the Pakej 5G Rahmah, consumers can choose between a Samsung Galaxy A14 5G or an Honor 90 Lite 5G for RM240 with a 24-month postpaid plan contract. Typically, smartphones are bundled with one one-year warranty but these devices come with a 2-year warranty as part of the Pakej 5G Rahmah bundle.
RM120 smartphones for 100,000 B40 individuals
For consumers from the B40 income group, the government is providing an additional subsidy worth RM120 for the smartphone bundle under Pakej 5G Rahmah. This means B40 individuals can get the device for RM120 instead of RM240. The subsidy will be given to the first 100,000 eligible recipients. The total subsidy of RM12 million will be funded by the government via the Multimedia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
If a telco can provide a device that’s cheaper than RM240, the B40 recipients will pay even less for the device. For example, if the phone is offered for RM200, the B40 consumer will only need to pay RM80 after deducting the RM120 subsidy.
Pakej 5G Rahmah is available until 31st December 2023
The Pakej 5G Rahmah plan and phone bundle are available for subscription from 31st August 2023 until 31st December 2023. More details will be revealed by the respective telcos and consumers can subscribe at the respective stores and online platforms. Each individual is only eligible for one Pakej 5G Rahmah bundle.
