CelcomDigi is currently embarking on a network integration and modernisation exercise which will consolidate both Celcom and Digi networks with the latest mobile network technologies. The newly merged telco revealed that they have completed 60% of its network integration and modernisation plans for 2023 with over 2,000 sites in 24 clusters have been consolidated to date.

As a result, CelcomDigi says customers can expect improved quality and experience from the newly merged sites. As published in their Q2 2023 report, the network has recorded a significant increase in average download speeds from 36.3Mbps on Celcom and 39.6Mbps on Digi back in January 2023 to over 50Mbps on the newly merged network.

In terms of data usage, Celcom and Digi customers in Q2 2023 have recorded an average monthly data consumption of 28GB and 24GB respectively. This marks a 15.5% and 8.3% increase respectively compared to the same quarter last year. At the moment, CelcomDigi claims to have the widest nationwide coverage with its 4G network covering 96% of the population while 4G+ covers 90% of the population.

Under the network integration and modernisation exercise, the company aims to consolidate the respective 12,000 sites from both Celcom and Digi networks to a total of 18,000 sites. It also aims to increase its 4G population coverage from 96% to 98% while increasing average 4G download speeds to 45Mbps.

CelcomDigi is partnering with Huawei and ZTE for what has been described as the largest telco network deployment project in the country. Besides consolidating two networks, CelcomDigi says it aims to build a future digital network using the latest LTE and 5G-ready technologies. As reported earlier, CelcomDigi plans to re-invest 15-18% of its total revenue in CAPEX to support the network upgrade programme.
