Honor has been one of the major players in the foldable smartphone scene for a while now. Last year, the Chinese company released not one, but two foldables in the form of the Magic V and the Magic Vs, with the latter eventually making its way to Malaysia too earlier this year. They aren’t resting on their laurels just yet though, as Honor has now launched their latest foldable, the Magic V2, in China.
Perhaps the most unique selling point of the Honor Magic V2 is that it’s thin—like, impressively thin. The Magic V2 comes in at just 9.9mm, 3mm less than its predecessor the Magic Vs and just a millimetre more than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
It’s also much, much thinner than other foldable smartphones out there, with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 measuring 15.8mm thick, the Google Pixel coming in at 12.1mm, and the Huawei Mate X3 at 11.8mm thick. When unfolded meanwhile, the Honor Magic V2 measures just 4,.7mm thin, with the entire device weighing in at 231g—less than the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max.
As for the displays, Honor has kitted out the Magic V2 with a 7.92-inch OLED main display, pushing a 2344 x 2156p resolution in an almost square-ish 9.78:9 aspect ratio. When folded meanwhile the outer display is a 6.43-inch OLED screen with a very conventional 20:9 aspect ratio pushing a 2376 x 1060p resolution. Both displays are capable of an up to 120Hz refresh rate with full coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, with the main display capable of up to 1600nits of peak brightness while the cover screen can go up to 2,500nits. You’ll also be able to use a stylus with either display.
Under the hood meanwhile you’ll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 system-on-chip. Curiously, this is the one with a slightly overclocked prime core running at 3.36GHz—the same as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 found on the Galaxy S23 series from earlier this year. This gets paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It comes with Android 13 out of the box, skinned with MagicOS 7.2 over it.
In the camera department, the Magic V2 features a triple rear camera setup, packing a main 50MP, f/1.9 rear camera with optical image stabilisation. This gets flanked by a 50MP, f/2.0 ultrawide camera along with a 20MP, f/2.4 telephoto with OIS offering a 2.5x optical zoom, with up to 40x digital zoom. There’s a 8×8 dToF laser focusing system too along with a flicker and colour temperature sensor on the rear camera module. Both displays also have a 16MP, f/2.2 selfie camera housed in a punch hole cutout.
Other features of note include a 5,000mAh battery keeping the lights on with 66W of wired fast charging. However, there’s no wireless charging here nor is there any form of IP rating on the Magic V2. Its hinge meanwhile is apparently built out of aerospace-grade titanium, and along with its flexible OLED panel from BOE is rated to last at least 400,000 folds and can hold its place mid-fold like Flex Mode on Samsung’s foldables. There’s a fingerprint sensor and stereo speakers too, along with support for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and 5G.
At the moment, the Honor Magic V2 is only available in China and starts at CNY8,999 (~RM5,778.63) for the model with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while for CNY9,999 (~RM6,420.77) you’ll get double the storage capacity. There’s also an Ultimate Edition of the Magic V2 with 1TB of storage, priced at CNY11,999 (~RM7,712.75). There’s a good chance that it will arrive in Malaysia later this year too, as the Magic V2 already has a product page on the Honor Global website while Malaysia is also a key international market for Honor.
